In Salach, you can combine hikes with local history and nature. Two circular trails offer different distances, alongside the striking Staufeneck Castle, historic buildings, and summer fun at the outdoor swimming pool. Traditional dining and train and bus connections round out the options for planning your stay.

Landscape and Hiking

A large part of Salach’s municipal area lies within the Hohenstaufen, Rechberg, Stuifen with Aasrücken and Rehgebirge Landscape Conservation Area. Salach also has six natural monuments. If you’re planning a hike, you can choose between two circular routes with clearly listed distances and elevation gains.

The Bärenbach circular trail is 9.7 kilometers long and rated moderate. Both the ascent and descent are listed as 227 meters. The Staufeneck circular trail covers 11.8 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 286 meters and a descent of 285 meters. Comparing the distances and elevation changes can help you choose a route to suit your preferred length.

The Staufeneck circular trail passes through native beech forests along the GeiĂźrĂĽcken ridge. It includes a tower viewpoint with vistas stretching from the Teck to the Hohenstaufen and, in good conditions, as far as the Stuttgart TV Tower. Staufeneck Castle can also be reached via several routes for hikers and cyclists. Its prominent position makes it a distinctive landmark of Salach; the keep offers views over Salach and the Filstal valley.

Local History and Special Details

The Schottschule, a listed historic building, is more than 100 years old and now houses Salach Town Hall. The well-preserved Schachenmayr workers’ settlement is also open to visitors. The Bärenbach Chapel contains two small Late Gothic sculptures: a Pietà and an Anna Selbdritt, both in niches in front of the chancel arch. The historic setting of St. Margaret’s Church is distinguished by valuable wall frescoes.

Salach’s community life also has historic connections: local associations include groups dedicated to historic firefighting equipment and to the organ at St. Margaret’s Church. Together with the buildings and artworks, these offer several points of interest for a walk focused on local and church history.

Summer, Dining, and Accommodation

For summer recreation, Schachenmayr outdoor swimming pool has sports and paddling pools, as well as a large lawn for playing and sunbathing. Since it is a seasonal offering, check the current season dates before visiting. Salach has traditional restaurants and cozy inns. The castle restaurant among the ruins of Staufeneck is known for fine dining.

Burghotel Staufeneck, located above Salach, offers a wellness area with a heated infinity pool and views over the Filstal valley.
