Donzdorf offers a castle at the center of town, a historic garden directly adjacent to it, and the Messelberg Tour as a hiking destination in its own right. Renaissance architecture and the garden’s evolution sit alongside nature features in the castle park and narrow paths along the edge of the Swabian Alb. When planning, it is worth distinguishing these attractions by interest and route length.
Castle and Castle Garden
Donzdorf Castle was built in the Renaissance style in the 16th century and stands at the center of town. The listed castle garden, covering around four hectares, adjoins it directly to the south. Over the centuries, it evolved from a Baroque garden into an English landscape garden. Renaissance architecture and later garden design thus come together in the same place.
Ten QR-code stations in the castle park introduce visitors to the urban green space habitat and its diverse inhabitants. Nature themes thus complement the history of the castle and garden. Private guided tours of Donzdorf Castle for groups are available at any time on request.
Two Routes with Different Focuses
A roughly seven-kilometer astronomical trail starts at the castle garden. The 7.7-kilometer Messelberg Tour, by contrast, begins at the Messelberg hiking car park: it is a circular route certified by the German Hiking Association in the “Dream Tour” category. The routes are similar in length, but their themes differ considerably: one is an astronomical trail, the other a hiking route along the edge of the Swabian Alb.
The Messelberg Tour follows narrow paths along the edge of the Swabian Alb for almost its entire length. Natural deciduous forests, colorful flower meadows and panoramic views characterize the landscape. The main viewpoint is the highly visible WeiĂźjura limestone rock summit of the Messelstein, at an elevation of 748 meters. With a little luck, you may spot ammonite fossils along the way.
Fasnet, Music and Events at the Castle
Donzdorf’s Fasnet celebrations, especially the grand parade on Shrove Sunday, are a highlight of the town’s annual program. During the carnival season, Donzdorf is also known as “Little Paris.” The PREMIO Donzdorf takes place in early September as a top-level competition to find the best pianist.
“Schloss.Garten.Genuss – The Market for Special Things” is aimed at garden lovers, food enthusiasts and Sunday strollers. The market takes place every two years on the third Sunday in June. The town festival is also held around the castle grounds; the open-air cinema in the eastern castle courtyard offers an outdoor experience with the castle as its backdrop. If you are planning your trip around a specific event, check the exact date in advance.
Visitor Information
The route through the castle park is largely accessible year-round and is easy to navigate with a wheelchair, rollator or stroller. In winter, weather conditions may limit access to some paths or stations; keep this possibility in mind when planning a winter visit. To explore what Donzdorf has to offer, you can choose between a stroll through the park, an astronomical trail, a hike along the edge of the Swabian Alb, and cultural events around the castle.
