Both the Four Castles Trail and the Jubilee Trail take around four to five hours; they differ in elevation gain, trail format and sights. There are also cycling tours of varying distances and difficulty ratings, as well as nature and cultural attractions in Pfalzgrafenweiler and its districts.
Hiking: similar duration, different trails
The Four Castles Trail is signposted clockwise, passes four documented medieval castles, and starts and ends at the central trail signpost by the town hall on the market square. In total, it involves 635 metres of ascent and descent. The Jubilee Trail is a 15-kilometre circular hiking trail with around 200 metres of elevation gain; it also takes four to five hours to walk. An information board is located at the town hall. Along the way, the trail passes the Russenbusch viewpoint, with views of the Swabian Alb and the Roßberg, as well as the ancient beech trees near Durrweiler, the Nördlinger Hut and the Hohlenstein natural monument. Both trails take a similar amount of time, so the choice comes down to the circular route format, elevation gain and the sights along each trail.
Cycling tours with different difficulty ratings
The “Experience Weiler Forest” cycling tour is 21.4 kilometres long, rated moderate, and leads from Pfalzgrafenweiler via Bömbachsee, Bösingen, the Mandelberg ruins, Neu Nuifra, Unterwaldach and Durrweiler back to Pfalzgrafenweiler. The “Pfalzgrafenweiler MTB Trail Tour” is 29.5 kilometres long, rated difficult, and follows technically challenging, flowing trails around Pfalzgrafenweiler. The difference is not just in the distance: the difficulty rating rises from moderate to difficult, and the MTB tour includes technically challenging, flowing trails.
Landscape and forest
The “Zinsbachtal” landscape conservation area lies between Pfalzgrafenweiler and Spielberg and offers numerous opportunities for hiking and cycling in nature. Near Kälberbronn is the “Große Tannen” nature reserve: it covers 14 hectares of state forest with exceptionally large silver firs and European beeches. This means a landscape conservation area offering two activities and a forest area with distinctive tree species provide two different nature-related attractions.
Local history and trails
In the district of Edelweiler, the Edelweiler Local History Museum houses machinery and equipment collected over the years. Pfalzgrafenweiler is also on the Schwarzwaldverein’s Ostweg, which runs from Pforzheim to Schaffhausen. Alongside the hiking and cycling tours, visitors can therefore explore a collection connected with local history and a long-distance trail as distinct attractions.
More cultural attractions in the wider Freudenstadt destination
The wider Freudenstadt destination offers further cultural attractions. Freudenstadt’s market square is the largest in Germany and features 50 fountains and arcades. In Alpirsbach, the monastery, with its imposing monastery church, is one of the few monasteries in southwestern Germany preserved in the style of the medieval Hirsau Reform. The monastery museum’s permanent exhibition, “Monks and Scholars,” displays clothing, letters, drawings, games and vessels from six centuries. Alpirsbach’s Museum of City History also explains the town’s development through selected collector’s items. The classic historical town tour visits historic buildings and includes a walk through the spa gardens.
