Weapon graves from the 6th and 7th centuries and a first documentary mention around 1100 are part of Wittendorf’s history. Today, these early traces stand alongside a marked hike, an eBike route and seasonal winter sports. This makes it possible to choose the focus of a trip according to your interests and the time of year—between village history, outdoor activities and winter pursuits.
History and Local Heritage Museum
The local heritage museum in the Kornspeicher is housed in a historic building that once belonged to Alpirsbach Monastery. The museum displays pictures and objects from village life. A local brochure also mentions special exhibitions on different themes that change each year. Together, the historical evidence and the museum objects offer different perspectives across time: the weapon graves date back to the 6th and 7th centuries, while the pictures and objects provide insights into village life.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Wittendorfer Kornäcker” hike starts at the car park by the Wittendorf sports ground and follows the yellow diamond trail marker towards Neuneck. After about 500 metres, it reaches a play and barbecue area beneath a lime tree. The lime tree also marks the highest point of the loop; a bench by the tree offers 360-degree views. The route thus combines a marked hike with a named rest stop and viewpoint.
The NPe5 eBike Tour 5, “Rund ums Loßburger Ferienland,” offers a different way to get active: it climbs from the Ursental to Wittendorf and continues into the Heimbach valley. By comparison, the Kornäcker hike specifies a starting point and a marked route towards Neuneck. The information makes clear how hiking and an eBike tour differ, as do their respective routes, without suggesting that they form a single route.
Winter Sports and a Current Notice on Guest Fishing
The Käppele–Wittendorf winter sports area lies at an elevation of 562 to 627 metres. The Wittendorf ski lift is a 400-metre platter lift with a capacity of 600 people per hour. Seasonal operation depends on snow conditions, so check before visiting whether conditions allow the lift to operate.
At the end of August 2026, guest fishing at Hubertussee was suspended with immediate effect and until further notice due to the low water level. Check the latest status before planning a visit.
In the wider destination of Loßburg
In the wider destination of Loßburg, the source of the Kinzig and Kinzigsee are located in the Zauberland nature area. The natural area around the lake provides a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. There are several themed trails for walks: the just-under-one-kilometre Wiesenerlebnisrunde is a circular trail with eight panels about fields and meadows. The Bibererlebnispfad runs between Kinzigsee and the source of the Kinzig, following narrow paths past five information panels about beavers. It was newly introduced in summer 2026. Children can learn interesting facts about beavers and hide in a beaver lodge.
Another trail, the five-kilometre Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm, connects the tower and Zauberland via narrow paths. The Vogteiturm on Rodter Höhe is 35 metres tall and open year-round. A flight of 172 galvanised steel steps leads to a platform 31 metres above the ground. In good weather, the view extends beyond Loßburg to the Zollernalb region. While the Wiesenerlebnisrunde focuses on fields and meadows and the Bibererlebnispfad on beavers, the tower and its views are central to the character of the Augenblickrunde.
The Kinzigtal cycle path is another option in the wider destination of Loßburg: it runs from Loßburg along the Kinzig to Alpirsbach, and you can return by train. Check current train services if you plan to make this return journey.
