The MĂĽhlbach Cycling Route passes through Teningen and forms a loop of approximately 30 kilometres. Those interested in history will find further points of interest at the Heimbach quarries, the Hilla von Rebay House and St. Gallus Church in Heimbach. Teningen leisure pool adds a swimming option to the mix. When planning your visit, you can decide what you would like to focus on: a cycling tour, architectural and local history, or the leisure pool.

MĂĽhlbach Cycling Route: Loop and directions

The MĂĽhlbach Cycling Route is an approximately 30-kilometre circular route with a few short climbs and descents. The distance is approximate; the short changes in elevation describe the route and do not automatically indicate its level of difficulty. Yellow signs with blue lettering mark the way. Along the route, 20 information boards cover mills, power stations and sights. The loop thus combines a specific route length with points of interest related to the MĂĽhlbach Route.

If you are planning an outing along the route, you can check in advance whether the signs and route are still up to date. The regional picture is much broader: in the wider Emmendingen travel destination, the district has 900 kilometres of cycle paths, including 250 kilometres of signposted routes. These figures describe the district’s cycling network, not the Mühlbach loop itself. They therefore offer two different scales for planning: a named circular route through Teningen or a broader network in the wider Emmendingen travel destination.

Stone, art and architectural history

The Heimbach quarries are large red sandstone quarries. Sandstone from there was quarried from the 14th to the 19th century for construction and repair work on Freiburg Minster. This long period makes stone quarrying a historical subject in its own right and connects it with the architectural history of the Minster.

The Hilla von Rebay House offers a different perspective: it documents the life of artist Hilla von Rebay and her parents through personal belongings and works of art. Special tours are available on request. If you would like to arrange one, confirm the date in advance.

St. Gallus Church in Heimbach was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1747 and 1777. Important parts of the older Gothic west tower were retained. The church thus brings together its Baroque reconstruction and the survival of older architectural elements. Heimbach Mill preserves the local milling tradition to this day; since 1979, the tithe barn has served as a community centre. Together, these subjects represent different aspects of cultural history: quarrying and construction, artistic legacy, church architecture, milling and civic use.

Teningen leisure pool

Teningen leisure pool has a competition pool, covered swimming areas, a 70-metre water slide and a diving pool. Swimming is therefore another option alongside the cycling route and cultural history. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current details before your visit.

More to discover in the wider Emmendingen travel destination

Hochburg Castle is also part of the wider Emmendingen travel destination. It is one of Baden’s largest castle complexes; its first written mention dates back to 1161. A museum run by the Hochburg Ruins Preservation Association and tours offered by the association provide further historical insights. If you plan to take a tour, check the dates in advance.

The wider Emmendingen travel destination also offers a regional perspective on viticulture and festivals: vineyards in the district are part of the Kaiserstuhl and Breisgau wine-growing regions and cover around 2,300 hectares. At the Breisgau Wine Festival, held every year in Emmendingen’s old town on the third weekend in August, more than 15 Breisgau winegrowers’ cooperatives and wineries present local wines, sparkling wines and new creations. As dates and participants may vary, it is worth checking the current festival programme.
