Königschaffhauser Gate, known locally as Torli, is the only surviving western gate of Endingen’s four city gates. Endingen combines urban history with attractions related to winegrowing; numerous hiking and cycling routes pass through vineyards, forests and volcanic hills.
Getting Here and Getting Around
The Kaiserstuhl is accessible by bus, train and car. From the Riegel exit on the A5, it is about five kilometers by road to Endingen. The drive from Riegel offers views of the Kaiserstuhl and often the Vosges as well. The Endingen Tourist Information Office provides advice on hiking and cycling tours and offers information materials on both; you can also rent e-bikes there. If you are planning a cycling tour, you can combine advice on routes with the option of renting an e-bike locally.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Tours
Many circular hiking trails and cycling routes start right in Endingen and pass through vineyards, forests and volcanic hills. Among the hiking trails, two named routes offer different highlights: the Katharinenpfad is considered a panoramic hiking trail starting in Endingen. The Kaiserstuhlpfad also starts in Endingen and passes through vineyards, deciduous forests, loess ravines and protected areas. This lets you choose between a trail focused on panoramic views and a hike through several landscape types. For a cycling tour, the Kaiserstuhl Cycling Trail offers the chance to visit picturesque villages around the Kaiserstuhl. Your choice of tour therefore depends on whether you want to explore the landscape on foot or visit villages by bike.
Local History, Museums and Wine
The Kaiserstuhl Local History Museum presents Endingen’s history, as well as crafts, winegrowing and patron saints of guilds. It also documents the emigration of around 400 people from the Kaiserstuhl to Tovar, Venezuela, in 1843. The Cheese Museum is housed in a former cheese dairy, which opened in 1901 and produced Alemannic cheese. The Carnival Museum displays carnival figures associated with Endingen’s lively Fasnet tradition. St. Peter’s Parish Church was first mentioned in 1256; its nave was rebuilt between 1773 and 1775 and is considered a regional late Baroque landmark. A guided tour of the old town followed by a wine tasting at Weingut Knab combines a walk through Endingen with a wine tasting. These attractions offer a range of highlights, from crafts and winegrowing to local history, Fasnet and sacred architecture.
Nature and Herbs in Amoltern
There are also a variety of natural attractions in Amoltern, a district of Endingen. Amolterer Heide is a protected area with many orchid species. The Amoltern Herb Trail is a circular route with themed stops about wild herbs. These offer two different options: a protected area known for its orchids, or a circular trail focusing on wild herbs. Together with the hiking and cycling routes starting in Endingen, these options can combine visits to the town, the history of winegrowing and tours through the surrounding countryside.
