A late Gothic mountain church with frescoes and a trail through wine villages give Nimburg two distinct themes: architectural and artistic history, and wine country with far-reaching views. If you are deciding between a focus on cultural history and an active experience in the landscape, the mountain church and Nimberg Trail offer different options.

Mountain Church and Local History

The mountain church in Nimburg was built by the Antonite Order between 1517 and 1545 and is late Gothic in style. Inside are frescoes depicting the Last Judgment, angels, figures from the Old and New Testaments, and John the Baptist. The imagery therefore includes both a large-scale depiction of the Last Judgment and individual biblical figures. Visitors interested in church art can explore these varied subjects as well as the architecture.

The mountain church has a G.F. Steinmeyer organ dating from 1911. It was built considerably later than the church itself. This makes it possible to consider two dates side by side: the church’s construction between 1517 and 1545, and the organ’s installation in 1911. The church thus combines a late Gothic building with a later musical element, and its history is not confined to a single century.

Local history also offers points of interest from different periods and places. There is evidence of Roman settlement near the mountain church. The now-vanished castle of the Counts of Nimburg once stood south of the village, on higher ground. The village center is notable for its regular street layout, which is thought to date from the relocation of the village toward the castle around 1100. This relocation remains a well-founded hypothesis. Visitors interested in history can therefore explore early evidence of settlement, the vanished castle and the possible changes to the village in their different contexts.

Wine Country and Views Along the Nimberg Trail

The Nimberg Trail runs mostly through vineyards, through the wine villages of Nimburg and Bottingen, and past Nimburg Mountain Church. Its far-reaching views include the Kaiserstuhl hills and the Riegel Gate, the Black Forest, the Emmendingen foothills, the Freiburg Bay and the Vosges ridge. The trail combines a landscape shaped by vineyards with views of several named regions. If you would rather make a route than a single historic building the focus of your visit, the trail offers a distinct option.

The Teningen branch of the Black Forest Association is responsible for a network of approximately 65 km of trails, including routes around the Nimberg. The trail manager and volunteer trail stewards regularly walk the marked paths. This distinction separates the specific landscape experience of the Nimberg Trail from the broader responsibility for the trail network.

Nimburg Lake: Swimming Area and Summer Training

Nimburg Lake is a popular local recreation area in the Kaiserstuhl region near Teningen and covers approximately 2.5 km². Only the southern 1.07 km² is designated for swimming. The area beyond the swimming zone boundary is a nature reserve and may not be entered. For your plans, it is therefore important to distinguish clearly between the swimming area and the protected area: permission to swim applies to the southern section, not the entire lake area.

During the summer months, the DLRG offers open training sessions for athletic adults at Nimburg Lake. This seasonal activity is a separate option for visitors interested in sports, and is specifically intended for adults. The lake therefore offers both a designated swimming area with defined boundaries and a seasonal training program.

When choosing where to stay, you can consider the different options separately: the mountain church and village center offer a chance to explore the architecture and local history, while the Nimberg Trail highlights vineyards, wine villages and far-reaching views. Nimburg Lake adds to the region’s offerings with a swimming area whose boundaries are clearly defined and seasonal training for athletic adults.
