Six telescopes take visitors back to medieval Neuenburg on the Archaeological Trail. Opened in 2023, the trail leads through the city center and brings the city’s history to life at specific locations. Highlights also include sweeping views from Berthold Tower, historical tours and leisure activities in the city park by Wuhrloch Lake—offering different ways to tailor your stay to your interests.
City history along the trail and in the squares
At six locations along the Archaeological Trail, telescopes show, among other things, the medieval city wall, the Church of Our Lady and Marktgasse. The views also include the folding shutters used for street sales. The stops bring together different aspects of medieval city life; exploring the trail, you’ll encounter both buildings and the commerce of the time.
At the Museum of City History, archaeological finds, documents, historical maps and paintings trace Neuenburg am Rhein’s development into a medieval center. At Münsterplatz, a telescope offers a view of the former church. Rathausplatz is also home to the fountain installation Monument by Professor Lutz Brockhaus. Created in 1990 and cast in bronze, the work is a chronicle of the city’s horrors and its will to persevere.
For a walk with an approximate duration, consider the roughly 60-minute route to the contemporary fountains. The Historical City Tour takes a different approach: it has 18 stops and is marked with information boards. You can choose between a tour with an approximate duration and a route that leads through the city’s history through its stops.
Panoramic views and orientation
From the highest viewing point of Berthold Tower, on a clear day you can see across the Rhine to the Vosges in France and the Black Forest on the German side, all the way to the Alps in Switzerland. A modern elevator gives visitors access to the viewing point. As access information can change, check the situation locally before you arrive.
Leisure in the park and routes along the Rhine
The city park by Wuhrloch Lake offers activities with different focuses. The modern “Lakeside” skate and fun park has ramps and obstacles for skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX riders. The park also has a medieval-themed playground covering around 1,000 square meters. This approximate area gives you an idea of its size; the skate and fun park adds activities on wheels to the range of options.
You can reach the Rheingärten from the city center via Münsterplatz, Berthold Tower and the city park by Wuhrloch Lake on accessible paths. As access routes may temporarily change, it’s worth checking the current route before your visit. For cyclists, the international Rhine Cycle Route “EuroVelo 15” passes by Neuenburg am Rhein; it runs from the source of the Rhine to the North Sea. As the route may be locally diverted, check its course before setting out.
