Those exploring Bötzingen on foot can choose between the wine trail, the fountain circuit and nature trails; there are also historic churches, a chapel and a manor house. Bötzingen is considered one of Baden’s oldest wine-growing communities. The routes have different focuses—wine-growing, water or habitats—and can be selected according to your interests.

Circular routes with different focuses

An approximately 10 km circular hiking trail and wine trail runs through the Bötzingen district. It was created through a joint initiative by the Bötzingen Winegrowers’ Association and the municipality. This provides a route that highlights wine-growing as a local theme.

The family-friendly Bötzingen Fountain Trail is approximately 7 km long and starts in the town centre at the railway station. It passes twelve running fountains and other attractions. Its 17 information panels explain the importance of water for people and animals, fruit and wine growing, local businesses and the fire service. Compared with the approximately 10 km wine trail, this circuit is shorter; its focus is on fountains and the many roles of water.

Another circular trail, 1.7 km long, runs through the Schambach Valley. The Schambach Valley Adventure Trail is suitable for pushchairs and combines activities with information about experiencing nature. Topics include Kaiserstuhl bird and butterfly species, wild bees and other animals. An observation beehive shows how a bee colony lives and works; a dry-stone wall provides shelter for lizards and slow worms.

The Bötzingen Forest Adventure Trail can be reached from Bötzingen railway station via signposted paths: the route leads through Pilsenstraße and Waldstraße, past the “Tennishalle” playground and along the Murrgraben stream to the Erlenschachen playground. The 17.9 km Steinkauz Trail is a regional hiking option that passes through Wasenweiler, Bötzingen, Eichstetten, Bahlingen and Riegel.

Churches and historic buildings

The Catholic parish church of St. Lawrence is considered to be probably Bötzingen’s oldest building. Its imposing church tower was built as a defensive tower; the choir windows and ribbed vault point to the Late Gothic period. The Madonna in the Baroque high altar is attributed to Hans Wyditz.

The Protestant church dates back to a smaller Gothic building from the century of the Reformation and has been used for Protestant services since 1583. It is increasingly used for sacred concerts such as “Bach in der Regio” and for choral concerts; these events also attract visitors from the surrounding area.

The Late Gothic St. Alban’s Chapel stands in Oberschaffhausen near Bötzingen and is known locally as the Peschdkirchle. It was built around 1480 as a church of the Teutonic Order and features 15th-century wall paintings. The manor house beside the former mill was built in 1578 and 1771 and served as the residence of Privy Councillor Enderlin.

Leisure and seasonal planning

The open-air swimming pool is a family-friendly leisure facility with a wide range of activities. It is open seasonally, from mid-May to mid-September. Check the current opening dates before your trip.

There is a network of cycle paths around Bötzingen. You can cycle around the Kaiserstuhl on an approximately 64 km loop away from road traffic. So, alongside the local circular routes, there are longer hiking and cycling routes to choose from; the stated distances help you gauge each outing.
