If you want to explore the vineyards around Ihringen on foot, there are routes of different lengths: short themed trails, longer hiking trails and a circular route for cycling. The town’s winegrowing history goes back a long way: wine was already being grown here in 962, when Ihringen was an important winegrowing community. The first documented mention of the town as “Uringa” also dates from that year.

Short themed trails and longer hikes

For a shorter family outing, consider the Hummel-Herta Trail and the Wendelin-Wiedehopf Trail. The Hummel-Herta Trail runs through orchards, is 1.2 kilometres long and takes about an hour. It follows the cycle path and is suitable for families and cyclists. The Wendelin-Wiedehopf Trail runs through the vineyards around Ihringen. Its two kilometres take around 1.5 to two hours; this trail is also suitable for families. This makes it easy to choose a route based on the time available: the Hummel-Herta Trail is shorter, while the Wendelin-Wiedehopf Trail takes you through the vineyard area.

The Panorama Trail takes more time: it is 6.5 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours. The starting point is the car park at the Kaiserstuhlhalle in Ihringen. From there, the trail runs via Schmerberg and Hintere and Vordere Eck to the start of Stalleckgasse. If you are planning a longer hike, you can compare this trail with the shorter themed trails by distance and time required.

The Kaiserstuhl Trail follows largely unpaved paths through vineyards, deciduous forests, loess ravines and nature reserves; the route ends in Ihringen. To hike the Kaiserstuhl Trail from Endingen to Ihringen, you can take the S1 from Freiburg towards Breisach to Gottenheim or Breisach, then change there in the direction of Endingen. For the transfers, the S1 connection from Gottenheim to Endingen and the S5 line from Breisach to Riegel are relevant. Check current connections and timetables before setting out.

Cycling and views across the Kaiserstuhl

For a day trip by bike, the Kaiserstuhl Cycle Route is a different proposition: the circular route is 64 kilometres long, starts in Ihringen, passes through several towns and ends back in Ihringen. The Panorama Trail and the shorter themed trails, by contrast, are hiking options with specified walking times. The options therefore differ not only in scenery, but also considerably in the time required and the way you travel.

Lenzenberg offers a viewpoint, serving as Ihringen’s natural viewing platform. From there, you can see, among other places, Tuniberg, Belchen, Blauen with its distinctive tower and Schönberg. On a clear day, the Swiss Jura comes into view; to the west, you can see the Vosges. These distant views complement the walks through the vineyards and the other landscapes of the Kaiserstuhl Trail with a viewpoint of their own.

Nature, geology and a garden in town

The Kaiserstuhl Nature Centre, run by Schwarzwaldverein e.V., is next to Ihringen Town Hall. Its compact exhibition explores the nature and geology of the Kaiserstuhl and includes a terrain model and a reading and discovery corner for children. From March to November, the centre offers excursions to areas of landscape and natural interest, including orchids, sunken lanes and volcanism. If you are planning an excursion, check the specific dates.

The fragrance and herb garden is in Schlupf, in the centre of Ihringen. You can reach it via RiedengartenstraĂźe 4, through a small alley, or from Vogelgasse via a footpath. Together with the nature centre, it offers two distinct places to visit: the garden in town and the exhibition with its seasonal excursions on nature-related topics.

Art trail and wine tastings

Opened in June 2026, the Ihringen Art Trail runs along RiedengartenstraĂźe through the village. At several stops, artists from Ihringen display their work. The art trail adds a walk through the village to the nature and hiking options, although no specific route length or duration is given.

Wine tastings are also available in Ihringen, but only for groups and by prior arrangement. The Freiburg State Winery offers group wine tastings combined with a tour of the Blankenhornsberg estate in Ihringen and the neighbouring vineyards; this experience is available by prior arrangement. KaiserstĂĽhler Winzer Ihringen eG offers group wine tastings, cellar tours and events on request. If you would like to include these activities in your stay, bear the requirement to enquire in advance in mind when planning.
