Au lies in the Hexental Valley between Schönberg and Schauinsland, just outside Freiburg. Despite its proximity to the city, the village has retained its natural character. Numerous farms still shape Au; most are dairy farms. For travellers who want to combine outdoor activity with a glimpse of a rural community, the forest, surrounding heights and the Hexental Adventure Trail are a particular draw. The Au Market and local history add other points of interest.
Forests, Heights and the Adventure Trail
Around 40 percent of the municipality is forested, and the forest is ideal for leisurely walks. Gentle climbs lead from Au to the surrounding heights. From there, views extend across the Freiburg Basin, to the Kaiserstuhl and to the Schauinsland massif. You can focus on a walk in the forest or on the views from the heights. Each offers a different way to spend a day outdoors.
The Hexental Adventure Trail is about ten kilometres long and follows a historic route from Au to Bollschweil. You can take its approximate length into account when planning your day. On the Au section, information boards explain forest ecosystems, animals, tree species and forestry. Twelve life-size carved forest animals also stand along the trail. This makes the route a combination of its historic course, nature-related topics and carved figures.
The Au Market and Local History
The Au Market offers seasonal vegetables, artisan-made meat products, bread and pastries, homemade Mediterranean specialities, and wines from local producers. The selection may vary depending on the season and vendors. Wine is served at the market, which also serves as a local meeting place. Market arrangements can change too. If visiting the market is important to your trip, check the current offerings and arrangements in advance.
The village’s history spans different periods. Au was first mentioned together with a church in 861; a vineyard in Au was first mentioned in 868. A chapel was built in Au in 1668 and consecrated in 1669. A battle took place in Au on 3 August 1644. These historical milestones range from early religious and winegrowing references to an event in the 17th century.
