Gärtringen offers a range of ways to make the most of a stay: historic buildings, a museum complex in Rohrau, cultural events and trails in the Schönbuch. Which ones suit your plans also depends on when you travel. Culture enthusiasts can visit St. Veit’s Church, with its distinctive architectural history; those interested in crafts and milling technology can include the shared museum complex in Rohrau in their plans. Trails, cycling tours and other activities offer different possibilities.
Church, Mill and Literature
St. Veit’s Church in Gärtringen acquired its present form between 1485 and 1500. Remnants of the defensive wall have survived. Based on its overall layout and, in particular, the shape of its tower, the church can be classified as a fortified church. This remains a possible interpretation, rather than an unequivocal classification. The architecture, wall remnants and tower shape together convey the site’s historic character.
The Gärtringen district of Rohrau is home to the gypsum and sand mill built in 1799. It became a small museum, officially inaugurated in March 1988. A historic smithy beside the sand mill and the sand mill itself form a shared museum complex that can be visited together. Anyone interested in the history of milling will find two related parts of a visit here, rather than just a single building to see.
Literature and cultural events come together at Villa Schwalbenhof. An exhibition there commemorates Friedrich Sieburg (1893–1964); the rooms, preserved true to their original state and where he lived, illustrate his life and work. The villa hosts the municipal cultural series “Culture at the Villa,” featuring cabaret, music, literature, theatre and children’s theatre. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the dates for your stay.
Events and Swimming
“Jazz im Park” is scheduled annually on the Sunday before the summer holidays as a jazz matinee in Kieferpark, featuring the Hardt Stompers. Another recurring event takes place at the Sand Mill: every year on Whit Monday, it participates in the “German Mill Day” and is open to visitors. At the “Mühlenhocketse” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., you can watch flour being milled live under original conditions. As both events are tied to specific dates, it is worth checking that they coincide with your travel dates.
For a day of swimming, the solar-heated outdoor pool offers a 50-metre swimming pool, 1- to 3-metre diving platforms, a water slide, a large shaded lawn and a sun deck. Check the current opening hours before your visit. The Camel Oasis offers one-hour camel rides through the countryside as well as introductory rides. If you plan to take part in either activity, check the booking arrangements in advance, as they may change.
Hiking, Cycling and Getting Here
In the Rohrau district, a hiking trail follows the particularly picturesque Jägerpfad through the Schönbuch and the approximately 156-square-kilometre Schönbuch Nature Park. Three circular hikes proposed by the Gärtringen branch of the Black Forest Association are also available. These two suggestions offer different starting points for hiking plans; the three circular routes are proposals only, with no individual routes specified here.
Signposted cycle routes start at the S-Bahn station and lead to surrounding communities as well as Herrenberg and Böblingen. The ADFC regularly offers guided cycling tours starting and finishing in Gärtringen; individual dates depend on the ADFC programme. As signposting may change and guided tours take place on specific days, check the latest route information and programme when planning a cycling tour.
For rail travel, S-Bahn line 1, operated by the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association, runs from Gärtringen station every 30 minutes, increasing to every 15 minutes during peak hours. Direct services run towards Böblingen, Stuttgart and Kirchheim/Teck, as well as towards Herrenberg. Check the current timetable for your travel dates.
