The village museum, historic walking tour, and several circular cycling routes offer different ways to explore Deckenpfronn’s local history and landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in historic buildings, learning about the past in a museum, or trails in the surrounding area.

Village history in the museum and the building

Since 1987, the Deckenpfronn Village Museum has been housed in the attic floors of the former tithe barn, which was converted into a community center. The listed tithe barn was built in 1807 and has a self-supporting roof structure. The building itself is therefore part of the story of local history: its use as a museum and its architectural history offer two specific points of interest for a cultural visit.

The HeiĂź-Kalt Museum offers a different way of presenting its exhibits. Many machines and devices can be set in motion there, and child dolls spin in a circle. Digital displays and listening stations complement the museum. Moving objects, digital elements, and listening stations each provide a different focus.

The tithe barn is also a venue: the 150 m² Kornsaal hosts six to eight cabaret evenings each year as part of the regular “Begegnung in der Zehntscheuer” cultural program. Check the current program before your trip. Since 2002, Deckenpfronn’s Fasnet carnival has been organized by the local fools’ guild and is one of the municipality’s recurring festivals.

Walking tours, hikes, and cycling

The Historic Walking Tour begins at the “Gateway to the Old Village,” right next to the town hall, and visits 17 sites in the old village. Information boards accompany the tour. Its starting point and number of stops give it a clear focus on Deckenpfronn’s local history.

The hiking trails start in front of the Protestant community center, where there is an information board and a map. Cyclists can choose from several circular routes within Deckenpfronn’s municipal area. If you prefer to travel on foot, the starting point provides guidance for hikes; the circular cycling routes offer a separate way to explore the municipal area. Check route conditions before setting out by bike, as they may change.

One hiking route passes the Egelsee nature reserve and follows the glider airfield to the edge of the forest. It also passes the Hohlwiel Celtic burial mound, which lies in a meadow. The route therefore takes in a range of points of interest: a nature reserve, glider airfield, forest edge, and archaeological site. Terrain or access may change; check conditions before setting out.

Another destination is the Heiliges Kreuz memorial cross, which serves as a memorial and viewpoint. It can be reached in a few minutes from the parking lot at Egelsee.

More options in the broader Böblingen travel destination

The broader Böblingen travel destination offers other hiking trails of varying lengths and with different stops. The Herzog-Jäger Trail in Waldenbuch is 13.7 kilometers long and features numerous highlights and interactive stations. The Heckengäu Adventure Trail runs for 23 kilometers around Aidlingen; its stops include a soil trail, a sensory spot, and a low ropes course. The Böblingen Forest Experience Trail runs for 4.5 kilometers through Böblingen city forest and has 14 stations. Based on the stated lengths, the Forest Experience Trail is the shortest of the three, and the Heckengäu Adventure Trail is the longest.

The broader Böblingen travel destination also offers a variety of cultural themes. The German Peasants’ War Museum in Böblingen documents the German Peasants’ War of 1525. Visitors can print title pages of Reformation and Peasants’ War pamphlets on a functional, scale model of an early printing press. The German Butchers’ Museum in Böblingen is dedicated to the history of the traditional butchery trade. It shows how meat and sausages were made using a sausage kitchen from around 1900 and depicts historic butcher shops from the 14th to the 19th century. A historic event and the development of a trade therefore represent two distinct museum interests.
