Riedlingen can be explored from two different perspectives: the medieval Old Town draws attention to half-timbered houses, the town wall and historic buildings; the Biodiversity Trail offers a focus on the landscape, with a section through a nature reserve. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a tour centred on the town’s history and a route covering topics related to local biodiversity.

Old Town and Riedlingen’s history

Riedlingen’s Old Town features lovingly restored half-timbered houses and historic buildings. A walk through the medieval Old Town explores the history of its half-timbered houses, town wall and towers, squares and people. The Old Town’s story is therefore not limited to individual buildings, but also includes its fortifications and public squares.

On a guided tour, participants learn more about medieval Riedlingen and see sections of the town wall and half-timbered buildings. Guided tours can be booked; if you plan to take one, check the current dates in advance.

Another area of cultural history is Hübler’s Fire Brigade Museum. The ground floor features vehicles, pumps, fire extinguishers, fire buckets, ladders and a collection of orders and decorations. Alongside the architectural history of the Old Town, visitors can explore a collection of fire engines and various types of equipment. The “Schöne Stiege” museum is also one of Riedlingen’s visitor attractions.

The former Capuchin monastery, dating from the mid-17th century, includes a monastery church with a crypt, the inner choir, cloister, refectory and an original brother’s cell. Together with the half-timbered houses and town wall, it offers another architectural perspective on Riedlingen, without reducing all of the town’s historical themes to a single period or architectural style.

Biodiversity Trail and riverside spots

One possible starting point for the Biodiversity Trail is behind the Jet gas station in Riedlingen. From there, a small loop along the Danube passes through a nature reserve. There are 13 information panels along the trail about local biodiversity; interactive features introduce children to the richness of the cultivated landscape. The route passes through Riedlingen’s built-up area and follows the Zollhauserbach stream to “Biberland.” The trail thus combines a specific route description with nature themes and information about the cultivated landscape.

The Old Town and the Biodiversity Trail offer different focal points: the history of houses, the town wall and squares on the one hand, and local biodiversity and the cultivated landscape on the other. The banks of the Danube in Riedlingen add picturesque spots for breaks and relaxation. They can be included in your travel plans as a place to unwind, without requiring you to follow a particular tour.

Another place in the town of Riedlingen

There is also a named place in the municipality outside the Old Town: the hanging garden is in Neufra, right next to the castle. Neufra belongs to the town of Riedlingen. This location information helps situate the hanging garden within the town, while the Old Town, Danube riverbank and Biodiversity Trail each retain their own distinct focus.
