In Inner Kartli, a long history of settlement meets Georgian church art and the landscapes of the Dzama Valley. Gori Fortress dates back to the 13th century; evidence of human settlement on its grounds reaches back to the 1st millennium BC. This span of time brings the region’s different historical periods to life.
History and Art in Contrast
Ateni Sioni Cathedral brings together two historical layers: the church dates from the 7th century, while its frescoes of the Mother of God date from the 11th century. It is known for these frescoes and is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian monumental art. Set on a rocky outcrop, it overlooks ancient terraced vineyards. Art history and views of the landscape come together at this site.
The archaeological collections of the Gori Museum of History and Ethnography reach back even further, dating from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. The Dzama Valley is home to as many as 60 historical monuments, including old and modern churches and monasteries, fortresses, towers and natural attractions. Kintsvisi Monastery sits on a hillside in the valley of the Dzama River, near the village of Kintsvisi in Shida Kartli.
Panoramas, Valleys and Waterfalls
Mount Shuano in the Dzama Valley stands 2,350 metres high and offers panoramic views. A 25-metre-high waterfall lies in the same valley, near Mount Abukhalo. In the Ateni Valley, Biisi Waterfall can be reached by a 2.5-kilometre hiking trail through natural surroundings. In winter, it transforms into a striking pillar of ice. With its trail and seasonal appearance, Biisi Waterfall offers a different experience from the panoramic views from Shuano. Before setting out on a hike, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.
Getting There and the Wider Context
Shida Kartli can be reached from Tbilisi by car in about 1 hour and 5 minutes. This travel time is a guide; traffic and route conditions may affect the actual duration. Check the journey time for your travel day. When choosing experiences in Inner Kartli, you can consider cultural history, mountain panoramas and a waterfall trail as different points of focus.
In the wider destination of Georgia, Mtskheta offers another historical point of reference. The city was the ancient capital of Kartli, the eastern Georgian kingdom, from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. The Historical Monuments of Mtskheta comprise Jvari Monastery, Svetitstkhoveli Cathedral and Samtavro Monastery; in 337, Christianity was declared the state religion of Georgia there. This history broadens the view of Georgia without conflating the places of Inner Kartli with Mtskheta.
Georgian Qvevri wine-making is also part of this wider cultural context: it began 8,000 years ago, has been preserved to this day and was inscribed as an intangible UNESCO cultural heritage in 2013. The terraced vineyards near Ateni Sioni, meanwhile, offer a specific impression of Inner Kartli’s landscape.
