From the birdwatching towers in the Javakheti Protected Areas, you can observe 140 species of breeding and migratory birds. This adds a distinctive dimension: Samtskhe-Javakheti can be explored through specific wildlife observations as well as its historic sites. In Georgia, Samtskhe-Javakheti is an administrative region comprising the two historic provinces of Samtskhe and Javakheti.
Lakes, Meadows and Protected Areas
The Javakheti Protected Areas are distinguished by their lakes, unique marshes, and subalpine and alpine meadows. They include Javakheti National Park and the managed reserves of Bughdasheni, Khanchali, Madatapha, Sulda and Kartsakhi. The protected area’s name therefore encompasses more than the national park alone: it includes several named areas.
Lake Paravani is a volcanic-tectonic lake. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is also part of the region’s protected natural landscape; it extends across Samtskhe-Javakheti, as well as Imereti and Shida Kartli. The two areas therefore differ in their geographical extent.
Birdwatching, Fishing and Paddling
The Javakheti Protected Areas are home to numerous fish species suitable for sport fishing. Check local regulations and conditions before your trip. Seasonal ice fishing is also possible on Lake Paravani; the main target is whitefish. These activities have different requirements: ice fishing depends on the season, while sport fishing is subject to local rules and conditions.
A kayaking section on the Paravani River is 16 kilometers long, has an elevation drop of 435 meters, and is rated between grades 4 and 5. The section is recommended for experienced kayakers with a local guide. Its length, elevation drop and difficulty rating provide specific guidance for planning; this kayaking trip calls for different skills than wildlife observation or fishing.
Caves, Monastery and Architectural History
Vardzia is designated an immovable cultural monument of national significance. A total of 242 caves in present-day Vardzia are partially or fully preserved. The Poka St. Nino Monastery is also located by Lake Paravani, and its history dates back to the 11th century. The cave site and the monastery offer different ways to explore the region’s history.
Meskhetian architectural history also has a distinctive feature: Meskhetian houses in Samtskhe-Javakheti had underground Darani tunnels that served as shelters during wartime. Another perspective on the region can be found in Abastumani. The Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory has been in operation since 1932, adding a scientific dimension to the picture alongside the landscape and cultural heritage.
Getting There and Choosing Your Travel Focus
To reach Vardzia, Ninotsminda, Akhalkalaki and Akhaltsikhe, take the route from Tbilisi along the Southern Highway, passing Lake Paravani. Check local road conditions. The lake is also a landmark for planning routes to these four destinations.
If you’re looking for hotels, first decide on the focus of your trip: birdwatching and protected areas, cultural heritage, or activities on the water. This lets you shape your plans around the experiences that interest you, rather than following a prescribed itinerary.
