Mestia combines Svan heritage with marked mountain trails: defensive towers and churches line the streets, and routes to Chalaadi Glacier and the Koruldi Lakes begin in the town center. When choosing between excursions, consider the destination, route length, and stated duration. The views and options for traveling on foot, on horseback, or by cable car also differ.

Mountain Trails: Glacier, Heights, and Views

The marked 19-kilometer trekking route to Chalaadi Glacier begins in the center of Mestia and takes six to eight hours. It reaches an elevation of 1,920 meters; along the way, there are views of the Chalaadi icefall and glacial debris. The glacier tongue extends below 2,000 meters to the tree line. Seasonal conditions may affect access to the route. The stated duration helps you estimate how much time to allow for this excursion.

The also-marked route to the Koruldi Lakes starts in the center of Mestia. It covers 15.6 kilometers, can be completed as a trek or on horseback, and reaches 2,740 meters after about eight hours. The trail passes through alpine meadows, with views of the Svaneti Ridge, Ushba, and Mount Bzhedukh. The route is therefore defined by meadows and views of named peaks, while Chalaadi is described as a glacier destination with views of the icefall.

In terms of time, the two excursions are close: six to eight hours are stated for Chalaadi, and about eight hours for Koruldi. At 15.6 kilometers, the Koruldi route is shorter than the 19-kilometer glacier route, but its stated duration is not correspondingly shorter. When comparing the trails, consider time and distance together rather than automatically assuming that the shorter route makes for a shorter excursion.

The 14-kilometer Mestia–Zuruldi Ridge route is another way to experience the area. It can be completed on foot or on horseback, and there is also a cable car option. There is a viewpoint with binoculars at the upper station. From there, the sweeping view stretches across Mestia, Ushba, Chatin, Tetnuldi, and other Caucasus peaks. Cable car service is not guaranteed year-round. This route can therefore be distinguished from the two described routes to the glacier and lakes primarily by its travel options and viewpoint.

Svan Culture in the Streets and at the Cultural Center

Mestia has 45 historic Svan defensive towers: 24-meter-high fortifications with distinctive Svan battlements. The streets also feature medieval fortifications, churches, and other buildings. The named churches include Matskhovari, Seti Archangel, and Pusti. These historic structures offer a tangible cultural focus alongside routes into the mountain landscape.

The Art and Culture Center presents local culture through Svan music and dance. The program may vary. The historic buildings and cultural performances thus offer different ways to experience Svan culture, both rooted in Mestia itself.

More Mountain Activities at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi

The resorts also add to the range of activities: Hatsvali Resort is 8 kilometers from Mestia, and Tetnuldi Resort is 15 kilometers away. The two resorts offer skiing, snowboarding, ski touring, heli-skiing, paragliding, and horseback riding tours. Activities and operating conditions may vary by season. If you are considering Mestia as a place to stay, you can weigh the Svan culture in town, marked trails with different stated durations, and other seasonal mountain activities.
