A defining feature of Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti is the contrast between protected wetlands and alpine nature. The region is also home to historic sites, collections and a multi-day hiking route. The UNESCO World Heritage List provides a specific historical reference point: Upper Svaneti was inscribed in 1996. Depending on whether you focus on landscapes, culture or activities, you can discover different facets of the region.

Regional Overview and Landscapes

For regional orientation: Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti are the two historic and geographic areas of the region. Their centers are Zugdidi and Mestia, respectively. Kolkheti National Park protects and preserves the Colchian swamps and lowland forests. In Zemo Svaneti, alpine nature, clear lakes, the Enguri River and its fast-flowing tributaries, and waterfalls shape the landscape. These varied natural features each offer a distinct perspective on the region.

One natural monument in Samegrelo is Martvili Canyon. Boat trips are available there along a 300- to 350-meter stretch of the Abasha River. Boat trips are weather-dependent. The administration of Kolkheti National Park also offers visitors boat tours at two locations near Poti and Zugdidi; these are available by reservation. Check the relevant details before planning.

History and Cultural Sites

In Zugdidi, the museum housed in the two Dadiani Palaces preserves more than 44,475 ancient objects, including a private collection and a death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte. The botanical garden at Dadiani Palace offers a different perspective on Zugdidi: established in 1840, it covers 67 hectares. The museum collection and garden offer different points of interest—preserved objects and an expansive garden.

Nokalakevi Museum Reserve invites you to walk through ancient history. The Church of the 40 Holy Martyrs, dating from the 6th century, is located within the reserve. Objects are also preserved there, the oldest of which date from the 8th–7th centuries BC. Here, you can encounter both a historic building and collection pieces from different periods.

The Enguri Arch Dam also combines a specific measurement with a designated cultural status: it is 271.5 meters high and was granted the status of an industrial heritage site of national importance in 2015. Enguri Attraction offers three tours of the dam facilities: Walking Tour, Short Tour and Full Tour. Check which dates are available before visiting.

Hiking, Regional Cuisine and Getting Around

If you are interested in a longer hike, the route from Mestia to Ushguli has a clear duration and distance: it takes four days and is approximately 57 kilometers long. As conditions and logistics in the mountains can change, factor current conditions into your plans. The duration and approximate length give you a concrete framework for the trek.

Regional cuisine includes Svan dishes such as Kubdari and Kupati, seasoned with Svan salt. A road follows the Enguri Valley from the source of the Enguri to the border of Samegrelo. Together with the varied landscapes, cultural sites and activities, this offers more than one possible focus for your trip: you can get to know the region through its nature, history or culinary specialties.
