Villard-Sur-Doron brings together alpine plants, winter cross-country ski trails, circular routes and traces of cultural history. For planning your trip, three differences are particularly important: the season, the length of the routes and the kinds of discoveries—from a landscaped arboretum to evidence of former rural life.

Arboretum and winter activities

The Villard-Sur-Doron Arboretum was established in 1991 and showcases around 80 tree and shrub species adapted to mountain conditions. Its diversity of plants gives it a clear connection to mountain vegetation. It is freely accessible year-round and is also accessible to people with reduced mobility.

MarcĂ´t focuses on winter activities. The Nordic ski area has a 1-kilometre practice trail as well as a green, a blue and a red trail; courses taught by ESF instructors are also available there. As these activities depend on snow, keep that in mind when planning your trip by season.

The Bisanne 1500 ski resort is part of the municipality of Villard-Sur-Doron. Situated at an altitude of 1,500 metres, it offers panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif and the Beaufortain and is connected to Les Saisies–Espace Diamant. While Marcôt brings together specific winter activities, with trails and lessons, Bisanne 1500 is distinguished by its altitude, panoramas and connection to the wider ski area.

Circular routes and paths between hamlets

Le Charvin is an easy marked circular walk starting from Villard-Sur-Doron: 2.4 kilometres long, with 150 metres of ascent and 150 metres of descent, and an average duration of one hour. It is freely accessible and open year-round. Outside periods of heavy snowfall, the Plaine de Villard is a very easy 15-kilometre circular route starting from Villard-Sur-Doron, with an elevation change of 409 metres. The route follows a balcony path towards Queige, runs along the left bank of the Doron and returns via small forest roads.

The Sentier des Granges runs between hamlets, following old paths once used to link the chalets. Around the village, the route passes traditional crosses and village basins associated with former rural life. Conditions may vary depending on the season.

When choosing a season, the year-round accessible arboretum and the Le Charvin route, which is open year-round, can be contrasted with Marcôt’s snow-dependent trails. The Plaine de Villard is available outside periods of heavy snowfall; conditions on the Sentier des Granges may vary.

Saint-Pierre Church

Saint-Pierre Church dates from the 18th century and features a Baroque interior and a sundial. The church houses a polychrome, gilded wooden Poutre de Gloire depicting Calvary. It shows Christ on the cross, the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist; five angels catch the blood from the wounds.
