Saint-Pancrace offers three distinct highlights: hiking on the Les Trois Croix et l’Alpettaz trail, winter activities in Les Bottières, and the Église de Saint-Pancrace with its Alpine Baroque art. You can plan your stay around a specific activity or a visit to the church. An approximate duration is provided for the hike; for winter activities, infrastructure, route and current conditions are important aspects to consider when planning.
Landscape and land use in Les Bottières
In the Les Bottières area, forests, pastures and mountain chalets combine with access to the Les Sybelles ski area. Land use is also part of this landscape: Les Bottières and the surrounding high-altitude area include extensive grazing land and some areas that are mown only occasionally. Forest and open, cultivated land thus form different facets of the landscape. Deer, badgers and wild boar may also be found in higher areas. If you are interested in rural life as well as hiking and winter sports, you will find both land management and wildlife here as topics in their own right. However, any wildlife sightings are uncertain; the presence of these animals does not guarantee that you will see them.
Planning hiking and winter activities
The Les Trois Croix et l’Alpettaz hiking trail is 5.1 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 330 metres. The duration is an estimate. Distance, time and elevation gain provide different points of reference: the distance indicates the length of the route, the time gives an approximate duration, and the elevation gain indicates the climb. When planning your day, you can consider these details together without treating the approximate duration as a fixed time requirement.
The Les Bottières ski station has six runs and three drag lifts, accessible from the snow start area. Operating conditions can change, so check them before travelling. The Montée au Grand Truc ski tour is a separate option: it starts at the Les Bottières snow start area and passes through alpine pastures and forests along a specially created and secured route. Winter conditions and access for this tour may vary, so it is advisable to check the latest information before planning. The two options therefore differ in focus: the ski station centres on runs and lifts, while the ski tour follows a route through alpine pastures and forest.
Église de Saint-Pancrace and Alpine Baroque art
The Église de Saint-Pancrace was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1900. The church was renovated in 2019. It is an example of Alpine Baroque architecture and has a star-covered vaulted ceiling. Inside, there is also a portable altar representing a large Baroque altar in miniature. The church’s history, vaulted ceiling and altar offer different points of interest if you are interested in its architecture and furnishings.
Volunteers offer a short, free guided tour of the Église de Saint-Pancrace. As local arrangements may vary, it is best to ask in advance if you would like to include the tour in your plans. This lets you schedule your church visit for a specific time, while the hike and winter activities each have their own details regarding duration, route or operating conditions.
