Those choosing Gleizé for a stay combining culture and nature will find a range of options: protected buildings and art, a theater program, leisure facilities in Chervinges, and a themed forest trail at Balcon du Morgon. A longer cycling route lies in the wider Beaujolais area. This gives you a choice of whether architecture, performances, leisure areas, or time outdoors should take center stage during your trip.

History in Different Forms

The Domaine de Vaurenard—with its château, chapel, and park—has been listed as a Monument historique since October 12, 2007. The château formerly served as a hunting meeting place for the Sires de Beaujeu. Its architectural and historical features include vaulted rooms dating from the late 15th century, period furnishings, and a neo-Gothic chapel. The building’s history and former use give the visit a distinct historical focus.

Another form of historical art can be found in the church in Chervinges: it houses a 1.20-meter-tall statue of the Virgin and Child. It probably dates from the late 14th century and is listed in the inventory of Monuments historiques. Its size, cautious dating, and inventory status make the statue a distinctive feature alongside the buildings at Vaurenard.

Theater and Cultural Venues

The Théâtre de Gleizé is a culturally significant historic venue and hosts the municipality’s cultural program. Its program includes classical and contemporary theater, jazz and classical concerts, dance, and performances for young audiences. If you would like to include a performance in your stay, check the schedule in advance. You can reach the theater on foot via Rue des Chères; parking is available at Place de la Mairie or by the cemetery.

The Mémorial France-Japon Japon-France also adds a distinctive cultural note. It has stood in front of the Salle Saint-Roch since 2014 and commemorates the history of Beaujolais as well as the close ties between France and Japan. Thus, alongside the performance program, there is also a memorial site whose subject connects the region’s history with the relationship between two cultures.

Leisure and Nature on Different Scales

The Chervinges tourist leisure and reception complex has children’s play equipment, a relaxation area, a multisport facility, and pétanque courts. If you would like to include leisure activities alongside the historic and cultural sites, you’ll find several clearly defined options in one place.

Balcon du Morgon is a geosite in the UNESCO-recognized Beaujolais Geopark. It includes a 1.5 km themed forest trail with 25 panels about trees. Three additional panels focus on fauna, flora, and aquatic life; a footbridge also crosses the Morgon. The trail therefore offers a natural history focus. As the route’s infrastructure may change, it is worth checking trail conditions before your visit.

A municipal leisure brochure from 2021–2022 lists a skate park, a fitness trail, a forest trail, and a play and picnic area at Parc de Bois-Doré. Before your visit, check which of these facilities are currently available.

For a longer cycling trip, Loop 5.7 in the wider Beaujolais area offers a 45 km route through vineyards and forests, including the two small passes of Saint Bonnet and La Croix Montmain. Despite its length, it is considered relatively accessible. Comparing the distances shows two different scales: the 1.5 km themed trail at Balcon du Morgon and the 45 km cycling route in the wider region.
