Pierre-Bénite brings together three distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: Renaissance and heritage history, parks with play and sports facilities, and a temporary ViaRhôna route. The Villa du Petit Perron reflects a complex architectural history, while Parc Manillier and Parc du Prado offer different features. If you’re planning to cycle, also take into account the route along the busy D15.

Renaissance and heritage history

The Villa du Petit Perron was built in 1520 by Antoine Gondi and Marie Catherine Pierrevive in the Florentine Renaissance style. Its architecture can be understood through its layout and later additions: three buildings are arranged in a U shape around an enclosed courtyard, and a chapel was added to the south façade in 1748. The gardens are laid out on two terraces connected by a staircase. The remains of towers recall the estate’s fortifications at the end of the 16th century. Its architectural history thus encompasses the layout, chapel, gardens and evidence of former fortifications. The entire estate was listed as a historic monument by decree dated September 25, 2006, including the boundary walls and garden.

Another heritage site is the former Manoir du Grand-Perron. The Renaissance façade and the associated roof of the central building have been classified as a historic monument since December 31, 1979. On the adjoining wings set at right angles, the surviving façade and roof sections, as well as the grand staircase, have been listed as protected elements since the same date. The dates refer to different scopes of protection: 1979 covers the specified parts of the former manor, while 2006 covers the entire Villa du Petit Perron estate, including the boundary walls and garden.

Parks with different features

At the entrance on Rue Ampère, Parc Manillier has an inclusive, music-themed playground. Facilities include swings, including a seat swing suitable for children with motor disabilities, a slide, trampolines accessible to wheelchair users, and playful interactive panels. Parc du Prado has children’s play equipment and a sports field. The site was converted into a public park in 1982 and extensively landscaped in 2001. The difference is clear: Parc Manillier offers a music-themed play area with the inclusive features listed above, while Parc du Prado combines play equipment and a sports field with its history as a park.

ViaRhôna and hiking trail

The Lyon–Saint-Romain-en-Gal–Vienne section of the ViaRhôna follows a temporary route along the western bank of the Rhône through Pierre-Bénite, Vernaison and Grigny, including sections with marked cycle paths. The temporary route through Pierre-Bénite and Vernaison follows the busy D15 and calls for extra caution. Since the route is temporary, it’s worth checking the latest stage information before setting off and taking the specific warning about the D15 into account when planning.

For hikers, À vos Parcs is another option: in Pierre-Bénite, the trail includes a stage at Château le Petit Perron. The cycling and hiking information therefore differs clearly: for the ViaRhôna, the temporary route and the D15 are important considerations; for À vos Parcs, the stage at the château is the specific local point of interest.

Plan your stay around your interests
