Denicé brings together architectural history, art along a marked circular trail, and visits centered on wine and beer. When planning your trip, the schedule matters as much as the theme: some offerings have fixed times, while others require advance booking. There are also walks to hamlets and the setting of the peaceful Nizerand valley. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
Church and Pilgrimage History
The present-day Saint Pancrace Church was built between 1872 and 1875 and inaugurated at Easter in 1878. The west-facing Neo-Gothic building has three aisles and six bays, with a narthex at the entrance. These terms describe its layout: aisles are the lengthwise sections of the church interior, and bays are its architectural divisions. The narthex forms the entrance area at the front. Saint Pancrace can therefore be understood in terms of both its construction period and its design.
The Chapelle de Chevennes offers a different historical perspective. It dates from the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 15th century. It was also a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The chapel can be visited during the European Heritage Days. If you would like to visit, be sure to take the event dates into account when planning.
Art and Walks in Denicé
Les Chemins des Arts is a marked circular trail of about 11 kilometers through Denicé. Along the route, works by nearly 25 artists are displayed at 12 locations. The trail extends for about 11 kilometers, and its artistic character comes from works by nearly 25 artists at 12 locations. If you would like to combine art with a circular walk, this project offers a specific way to do so.
A walk around the village center leads to picturesque hamlets. This gives you a choice of two different focuses: the hamlets are the destination on the walk, while Les Chemins des Arts takes you to artworks at various locations. Denicé’s setting in the peaceful Nizerand valley adds another perspective to the village, alongside its cultural attractions and walking routes.
Wine, Tastings and Brewery
The L’Affoleuse brewery is open to the public every Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as by appointment. At Château de Buffavent, a tasting features five wines from the Pierres Dorées terroir. The château also offers a guided tour of the vineyards and wine cellar by prior arrangement. The tasting and the tour are separate offerings: the former focuses on the five wines, while the latter takes you through the vineyards and cellar.
Domaine du Champ de la Croix offers private customers free tours and tastings by prior arrangement. Its offerings include numerous cuvées from the Beaujolais and Brouilly appellations, as well as Crémant de Bourgogne and Pétillant rosé. The wine visits also differ in focus: Château de Buffavent describes a tasting of five wines, while the Domaine offers private customers a free tour and tasting.
Opening hours, booking requirements and product offerings may change. Check the current visiting conditions before you travel. Advance booking is required for the guided tour at Château de Buffavent and for tours and tastings at Domaine du Champ de la Croix.
Plan Your Stay Around Dates
The Fête des Conscrits takes place on the last Sunday in February each year. If this tradition is relevant to your trip, you can plan around this recurring date. This is a different approach from planning wine visits, which require advance booking: here, the calendar provides the reference point, while those visits are arranged individually.
