A signposted circular route leads through the historical and natural heritage of Saint-Priest-la-Prugne. The 6.5-kilometre route starts at the village community hall. This gives you a specific starting point and a clearly stated distance for planning a day of hiking. The route focuses on both nature and history; you can take into account which of these two aspects interests you more when putting together your stay.
Romanesque architecture and historical traces
A Romanesque church was built in Saint-Priest-la-Prugne in the second half of the 12th century. Its distinctive architectural features include a crossing in the Auvergnat style and half-barrel vaults over the two arms of the transept. The crossing is the area where the nave and transept meet. The vaults complement this architectural focal point and give the church a striking feature that offers a glimpse into the village’s architectural history.
The history of work is also part of the heritage: it includes 41 water-powered sawmills. One of them remained in operation until 1980. This figure shows that the heritage is not limited to a single historical building, but also includes a traditional craft linked to the use of water power. Together with the Romanesque church, these offer two distinct ways of exploring the past: religious architecture and an earlier form of production.
Viaduct, waterfall and Pierre des Fées
The Viaduc des Peux was completed in 1912. From 1912 to 1939, it carried a narrow-gauge railway between Vichy and Roanne. To reach it, follow the former “Chemin du Viaduc” from the Col du Beau Louis. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change. At the viaduct, a specific access point meets the history of a railway connection.
Other striking features offer different points of interest. The Cascade de Bout is formed where the Noyer stream, also known as Montlaurençon, plunges down in the middle of the forest. At the Pierre des Fées, remarkably circular basins have been carved into granite blocks. While the viaduct recalls the former railway, the stream and forest setting shape the impression made by the waterfall, and the worked granite surfaces define the Pierre des Fées. These places offer different themes for an outing without needing to be combined into a single walk.
Natural attractions and seasonal activities
The Bois Noirs massif is well suited to hiking, mountain biking and nature-focused stays centred on peace and quiet. Another natural landmark in the region is the Puy de Montoncel: its summit reaches 1,287 metres and lies on the border of the Loire, Puy-de-DĂ´me and Allier departments. Summer activities at the Puy include hiking, the VTT-FFC mountain biking base in the Bois Noirs massif, a permanent orienteering course and archery. In winter, cross-country skiing, sledging and snowshoeing are available. The change of seasons therefore changes the possible focus of a visit; for winter plans, take snow conditions and seasonal availability into account.
This distinction is useful when choosing when to travel: summer activities include orienteering and archery as well as hiking, while the winter list focuses on snow activities. If you are planning your stay around a particular activity, check its availability for your intended dates. This keeps seasonal options in your plans without assuming that any particular activity will be available at all times.
Local produce and visits by appointment
Héritage de Rhéa grows plants and fruit organically in the Monts de la Madeleine and gathers them by hand. The company produces herbal teas, culinary herbs, jams, syrups, honey and hydrosols. Héritage de Rhéa offers educational visits by appointment. If this is of interest to you, arrange your visit in advance. The visit adds a glimpse into local produce and cultivation to the historical and landscape themes.
Saint-Priest-la-Prugne thus combines a signposted hiking trail with Romanesque architecture, traces of water-powered sawmills and a historic railway viaduct. There are also natural attractions with different features and activities that vary by season. Choose the focus that matters to you for your stay: a hike, cultural history or seasonal outdoor activities.
