Le Bessat combines Nordic activities with marked hiking routes and local history: an easy loop runs through a fir forest and offers views of the MĂ©zenc; the church, cross and washhouse provide other historical highlights. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth first considering whether winter sports, a hike with a set duration, or a variety of local discoveries are your priority.
Nordic Activities and Snow Conditions
The Domaine Nordique Le Bessat – Les Grands Bois offers classic cross-country skiing and skating, as well as snowshoeing. The trails and paths are groomed, marked and secured; however, winter operations depend on snow conditions. Access points are at La Croix de Chaubouret, Le Tremplin and Les Trois Croix. As access arrangements may change with seasonal operations, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
Another option for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter is the La Grande Traversée des Monts du Pilat. It connects the areas of Burdignes, Saint-Régis-du-Coin and Le Bessat and has a winter route for these two activities. This means you can choose activities along a route as well as those offered by the Domaine Nordique.
Hiking Routes with Different Details
Les Rochettes – Le Bessat n°1 is an easy 7.2-kilometre loop hike that takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The loop starts and ends at Le Tremplin, runs through a fir forest and offers views of the Mézenc. Its distance, approximate duration and circular format give this hike a clearly defined timeframe.
Sentier n° 10 Marcellin Champagnat is a hiking trail in the Parc naturel régional du Pilat, marked white and brown in both directions. The route “La Maison des Gardes et la Porte de Fer – Le Bessat n°3” passes the Le Pré Dorel clearing and the Bachat there, then continues to the Maison des Gardes. The Tour du Haut Pilat runs from Croix de Chaubouret, via the La Madone viewpoint, down to Le Bessat; after crossing the village, it joins the GR42. Le Bessat also has marked trails and the long-distance hiking routes GR7 and GR42.
Local History Along the Way
The present-day church of Le Bessat opened in August 1920. A historic cross erected in 1875 stands at Croix de Chaubouret; the crossing between the Loire and Rhône valleys is historically important. The Grand Bachat served as a communal washhouse. Together, these places reveal different aspects of the village’s history: a religious building, a cross at an important crossing point, and a building with a communal purpose.
More Activities and Local Information
Plan d’eau du Tremplin lies at the edge of Les Grands Bois forest. Fishing is permitted in the pond, which is fed by the Furan, subject to the applicable regulations. Those interested in orienteering will find courses of varying difficulty at the Espace Sports d’Orientation du Bessat, with 70 permanently marked control points.
Cap Oxygène offers seasonal outdoor activities, including hiking, snowshoeing, orienteering, Nordic walking, archery and wooden games. The outdoor Balnéo-bois area includes a Nordic bath, a Russian banya and a cold-water fountain. Advance booking may be required for wellness services.
The Espace Nordique des Monts du Pilat offers hiking, nature activities, Nordic walking, orienteering and biathlon. All activities are led by state-certified guides; they are offered by reservation and may be seasonal. The puzzle game “Gouttelette – Sur le chemin de l’eau” is recommended for children aged 5 to 11: it offers a fun way to discover Le Bessat and its secrets. At weekends, the Syndicat d’Initiative du Bessat provides information about hiking, mountain biking, orienteering and Nordic activities in Le Bessat and the surrounding area.
