Several hiking trails start in Véranne. The summit area of the Crêts du Pilat and the paths around Saint-Sabin offer different options for outings: a circular route along the ridge, a viewpoint, and a site believed to have been a Celtic place of worship. There are also hiking options lasting two hours or a full day to help you plan.

The summit area of the Crêts du Pilat

Classified under the 1930 law, the summit area of the Crêts du Pilat covers 1,300 ha. It extends across La Valla-en-Gier, Doizieux, Graix, Colombier, Véranne, Roisey and Pélussin. Véranne therefore lies within a landscape that spans several municipalities and whose character is not confined to a single place.

The French State has recognized the area for its landscape value as an exceptional site and part of the national heritage. This designation gives the landscape significance beyond the local area; at the same time, you can explore the surroundings on hiking trails that start in Véranne or pass through the summit area.

Hiking along the ridge

The interpretation trail Discover the Crêts follows a circular route along the ridge. It passes through heathland and scree fields and reaches Crêt de la Perdrix. At 1,432 m, this summit is the highest point in the massif. If you want to choose a hike based on its terrain, this route offers a specific combination of a loop, ridge, heathland and scree.

Several other hiking trails also start in Véranne. The Saint-Sabin interpretation trail offers a different experience: it leads to a viewpoint with views stretching from the Alps near Mont Ventoux to Mont Blanc. The trail also leads to a site believed to have been a Celtic place of worship. Check the route details before setting out.

Saint-Sabin: trail, views and history

The Saint-Sabin interpretation trail starts in the hamlet of Saint-Sabin. It can be reached via the D63 between Pélussin and Le Bessat, below Col de l'Oeillon. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before driving. The viewpoint makes this trail particularly appealing if you want to take in the landscape as well as walk when choosing an outing.

The present-day Chapelle Saint-Sabin is part of the local history. It is believed to be the third chapel on this site and to date from 1683. It is considered almost certain that silk manufacturers from Pélussin built it to protect silkworms.

Time for hiking and a picnic

Vert-ânes offers a selection of hikes for beginners and experienced hikers at trailheads. Options range from two hours to a full day. Hiking offers are seasonal; check availability and details in advance. This lets you match the length of your outing to the time you want to set aside for it.

For a hike, you can also get a picnic basket from Vert-ânes containing charcuterie, cheese, bread and fruit from small local producers. Check the offer details in advance as well. If you are looking for accommodation for a hiking stay in Véranne, your preferred focus is a useful place to start: the circular route along the ridge or the Saint-Sabin trail with its viewpoint and historic site.
