Saint-Jean-La-Vêtre can be explored through several specific interests: hiking sections with different stated durations, the forest and meadow landscape of the Vallée de la Vêtre, and a church and a chapel with histories of their own. When planning your trip, you can decide early whether to allow more time for walking or focus on architectural and local history. Two stages with stated distances and durations make it especially easy to compare the time required.

Compare hikes by time required

The section of the Chemin de Montaigne GR®89 from Saint-Didier-sur-Rochefort to Saint-Jean-La-Vêtre is 4 km long; the stated duration is 1 hour and 5 minutes. Les Grenadières covers a 6.8 km section from Col des Placiaux to Saint-Jean-La-Vêtre, with a stated walking time of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Compared by length and duration, Les Grenadières is the longer of the two stages: the difference is 2.8 km and 45 minutes. This lets you compare the walking time with the rest of your stay, rather than considering only the number of kilometres. The stated starting points also distinguish the sections: one begins in Saint-Didier-sur-Rochefort, the other at Col des Placiaux; both lead to Saint-Jean-La-Vêtre.

Landscape and nature

The La Vallée de la Vêtre hiking route passes through forests and meadows; the forest types mentioned include coniferous and deciduous forests. Saint-Jean-La-Vêtre is also one of the municipalities in the Natura 2000 site FR8201756 “Parties sommitales du Forez et hautes chaumes”. This brings together a specific landscape experience along a hiking route and the municipality’s wider regional context.

Church and architectural history

The Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist has a history of construction spanning several centuries. Its oldest parts date from the second half of the 15th century. The side chapels and transept crossing were added in the 16th century; the portal bell tower was built in the early 17th century. The sequence thus runs from the oldest parts through later additions to the bell tower. A bell is also part of the church’s history: it dates from 1749 and was listed as a historic monument in 1963. Restoration work was completed on 28 January 2022, when the work was formally accepted.

The Chapelle des Anges

The Chapelle des Anges brings together different historical connections. It was built in 1641 following a vow made during the plague of 1631. The chapel also served as a hideout and meeting place for local Maquisards and resistance fighters. It also houses the statue Notre-Dame des Anges: carved from a single piece of wood, it depicts the seated Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus on her knees. The chapel’s history thus encompasses both a religious origin and its later role in the local resistance.

Another focus: wellness

A tourism listing updated in February 2025 includes, among other things, hydromassage with chromotherapy, mud wraps and jet showers for the Association Les Bains du Forez. It also lists a traditional sauna, a saunarium and a Roman bath, as well as reflexology, naturopathy and therapeutic massages. This topic differs from the hikes and architectural history: here, treatments and baths complement the options for planning a trip around walking time or historic sites.
