Charlieu brings together a Romanesque Benedictine abbey built from yellow stone and a long history of silk weaving. Churches, museums and a nature trail add to the cultural attractions; a local specialty is also part of the town’s character. This gives you a choice of different themes for planning your visit: monastic history and a pilgrimage route, textile craftsmanship or a stroll through the historic centre.

Abbey, History and Pilgrimage Route

The Benedictine Abbey of Charlieu was founded around 875 by Robert, Bishop of Valence, and affiliated with the Abbey of Cluny around 930. Its founding and later affiliation were two distinct milestones in its history. The Romanesque complex is built from the region’s yellow stone. You can visit it independently; an information leaflet is available in five languages. The abbey also offers a regular guided tour covering its history and architecture. The GR765 Way of St James from Cluny provides access to the abbey, linking a pilgrimage route with a visit to the monastery.

Churches and HĂ´tel-Dieu

A guided tour of the historic centre takes in Saint-Philibert Church, the town hall, and several characteristic half-timbered houses and houses built from Charlieu’s blond stone. Saint-Philibert Church is open daily; check its opening information for the season before travelling. A church in Charlieu also contains 24 painted medieval choir-stall backs dating from around 1400. They are considered unique in France and rare in Europe.

The former Hôtel-Dieu in Charlieu is partially listed as a Monument historique. The Musée Hospitalier presents the history of the Hôtel-Dieu from 1259 until the hospital closed in 1981. The collection includes a 19th-century pharmacy, which is classified as a Monument historique. The Hôtel-Dieu thus brings together the institution’s long history and a specific historic collection.

Silk Weaving and Museums

The Musée de la Soierie traces the history of silk weaving in Charlieu from the 19th century to the present day and offers weaving demonstrations. It also displays the collections of the Corporation des Tisserands, considered the last of their kind in France. The Musées de Charlieu offer guided tours of all the museum areas, including the weaving demonstrations at the Musée de la Soierie. This lets you discover the history of the craft through both the collection and the demonstrations.

The museum programme includes participatory workshops for children, families and adults; adults can also take courses to learn weaving. Programme details may vary by season. If a workshop is important to your stay, check the dates before travelling. The “Mystère Monastique” tour offers a different focus: it follows in the footsteps of the monks who shaped the Pays de Charlieu, including Benedictines and Franciscans in Charlieu. Its perspective therefore extends explicitly beyond the town’s history to the wider Pays de Charlieu.

Nature Trail, Cycle Route and Regional Speciality

The Sentier du Bézo is a nature trail in Charlieu. Information panels cover river life, drinking water, biodiversity, flood risks and local history. If you’d like to explore these subjects alongside the area’s historical sites, the trail offers a distinct way to discover the surroundings. Charlieu can also be reached by bike from Pouilly-sous-Charlieu via the Véloire, a greenway along a former railway line.

Another local speciality is Andouille de Charlieu. It is made by members of the Confrérie des faiseurs d’Andouille and can be eaten hot or cold, depending on the season. Alongside the abbey, silk museum and Hôtel-Dieu, it adds another regional dimension to your stay without requiring every discovery to follow the same theme.
