Numerous trails cross La Tuilière and can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Options range from an easy hiking route with an approximate duration to signposted mountain bike loops with varying levels of difficulty. There is also a nature trail, washhouses and traces of the area’s history. This lets you choose your outings to suit your preferred activity and level of challenge.

Discover Hiking and Nature

Les grandes Bruyères is an easy hiking route in La Tuilière. It is 9.4 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of three hours. The route passes through a hedgerow landscape and offers viewpoints as well as well-preserved local heritage. Its length and duration provide a practical guide for planning your hike, while the landscape and heritage traces add to the experience.

A small, freely accessible loop trail lies beside the Lavoir in La Tuilière. Information boards there introduce key natural habitats and species in the Natura 2000 area. The loop was created in 2018. Check the trail conditions before your visit. For a winter outing, hiking route N° 15 starts at the Lavoir de Montloup on the Plateau de Montloup; it can be explored on snowshoes in winter, weather and snow conditions permitting.

Mountain Bike Routes for Different Skill Levels

Signposted route N° 4 – Epinat starts in La Tuilière and follows a moderately difficult 13.4-kilometre loop. It is designated for mountain bikes and e-bikes. A more challenging option is route N° 5 – Le Rocher Dardant: this difficult mountain bike trail from La Tuilière is 19.2 kilometres long, has 528 metres of elevation gain and takes an indicated 1 hour and 35 minutes. The two routes therefore differ both in their stated difficulty and in their length. Trail conditions can vary on both; before setting off on route N° 5, also check the trail conditions and signage.

La Tuilière is one of the Roannais starting points for the Massif des Bois Noirs VTT-FFC area. Route availability in this area may change. If you plan to ride here, check which routes are currently available before setting out.

Washhouses and Local History

The village of La Tuilière is a historic heritage site. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 16 April 1856; it was completed on 16 November 1857. The historic hamlet of La Tuilière also tells the story of the area’s development: it was established at the beginning of the 19th century beside a brickworks. The foundations of the brickworks remain between the road and the Böen River, which is rich in fish.

The hamlet of Brossard is home to the restored Lavoir de Brossard, at an altitude of 749 metres, with views of the surrounding countryside. Signposted paths lead there from the car park in the village centre in approximately ten minutes on foot. This walking time is approximate; trail conditions may vary. At the entrance to the hamlet of Montloup, a picnic area by the Lavoir de Montloup sits at an altitude of 950 metres and offers panoramic views of the Monts du Forez. The picnic area at the Lavoir du Bourg includes an educational trail by the restored washhouse; the Madone is nearby. Another statue of the Madonna stands on a wooded plot near La Tuilière and was recently restored.

At Les grandes Bruyères, a small stone mill turns wheat grains into organic flour. Varieties include wholemeal, semi-wholemeal and white flour. This adds an insight into local grain processing to the routes’ nature and heritage themes.
