On a rocky outcrop above the village stands the Maison-Forte de Vertrieu, whose history dates back to the 13th century. Its architectural history, gardens, and trails to viewpoints offer different ways to shape a stay. Important for planning: the Maison-Forte is inhabited, and its courtyards are open to visitors only during the European Heritage Days and local festivals. The park and French garden have their own visiting hours, which are limited to certain seasons. You should therefore consider access to each separately and check before setting out.

The Maison-Forte and other traces of the past

The Maison-Forte is a stately residence dating from the 17th century, with four square towers, a landscaped park, and outbuildings on the banks of the Rhône. It was altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The château, its outbuildings, the park, the associated structures, and the large gateway have been listed as historic monuments since 1991. This allows you to understand the building not only through its towers, but also through the development of the entire complex.

Different chapters of the village’s history can also be found beyond the Maison-Forte. The cemetery chapel was built in the mid-19th century at the initiative of Ferdinand de Laroullière. In the Forêt de Serverin stands the Glacière de Vertrieu: built in 1716 as a forerunner of the refrigerator, it was used until the beginning of the 20th century and restored in 1995. The historic Bac à traille served a different purpose. It enabled residents to cross between the two banks of the Rhône, but is no longer visible today.

Gardens with limited visiting hours

The park and French garden of the Maison-Forte are open to visitors free of charge daily from 12 noon to 6 p.m. from May 1 to July 14, as well as during the European Heritage Days. These hours apply to the park and French garden; the courtyards are open on the special occasions mentioned above. Check the dates before travelling, especially if you are planning your visit around a festival or the Heritage Days.

The Jardin des Simples offers another garden experience: it is home to catalogued medicinal and flowering plants, and has benches, tables, and a small picnic area. This gives the garden a different focus from the historic courtyards. If you would like to plan a break, the seating and picnic area provide convenient reference points; however, you should take the relevant access conditions into account when planning your visit.

Walk to a viewpoint or set out in search

The La boucle du Serverin hike starts at the village entrance and leads to the La Croix du Serverin viewpoint. Along the way, it heads towards the Bonson spring. At the Croix stands a six-metre-high stone cross with an orientation table. From there, you can see Vertrieu, the Rhône, the Monts du Bugey, and the Plaine de l’Ain. The route and viewpoint give the hike a clear destination; conditions on the trail may change, so it is worth checking before setting off.

The Parcours numéroté offers a different way to explore the village. Starting at the Jardin des Simples, it invites children to look for animals hidden in the village undergrowth. The route also passes a climbing area. This gives you two distinct activities to choose from: La boucle du Serverin focuses on the walk to the viewpoint, while the Parcours numéroté is about searching for animals. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out. The Parcours patrimonial is accessible every day throughout the year; it is still worth checking before travelling.

Plan your stop in Vertrieu

For cyclists on the ViaRhôna, Vertrieu is a stop along the way. If you are planning to cycle, check current route conditions in advance. When choosing what to do, it helps to distinguish the seasonal access around the Maison-Forte from the trails that are accessible every day throughout the year. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on heritage, garden visits, viewpoints, or an activity for children, without assuming that the same opening hours apply everywhere.
