Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse can be experienced in two distinct ways: Carthusian history is brought to life in museums, while named trails explore the town and its landscape. There are also seasonal winter activities. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on exhibitions, a particular route, or the options available during the winter season.

Carthusian history and sacred art

The Musée de la Grande Chartreuse is located in the Correrie, a former home of the Carthusian brothers. It presents European charterhouses and their characteristic architecture, and provides information about the Carthusians’ daily life and history, from Bruno of Cologne to the present day. Architectural forms and ways of life are presented alongside the Order’s long history. In 1084, Bruno of Cologne settled in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and founded a “wilderness” there with six companions.

The Musée Arcabas en Chartreuse, located in the church of Saint-Hugues-de-Chartreuse in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, offers a different cultural perspective. Its collection includes 111 paintings, stained-glass windows, sculptures, and furnishings. It is among the most outstanding works of sacred art of the 20th century. The two museums thus offer different perspectives: one focuses on charterhouses, religious life, and architecture, while the other is devoted to sacred art.

Hiking between the village, forest, and mountain views

The grounds of the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse are the starting point for numerous hikes. One option is the “Tour de Saint-Pierre” trail, described as an easy loop around the village. It follows roads, paths, and a track along the Guiers. Through the forest, the trail follows the Sentier des Orchidées and the slopes of La Scia; along the way, there are views of the Chamechaude valley. These named sections and landscape features give the route a different character from a visit focused solely on the exhibitions.

Another specific option is the marked “Boucle découverte autour de Saint-Pierre” trail loop. It is 7.22 kilometers long, with 350 meters of elevation gain and 350 meters of descent. Markings and route details may change; check the information before setting out. For a quieter route, the hike to the Grande Chartreuse monastery is described as passing through the quiet zone of the Désert de Chartreuse, with views of the Grand Som and Petit Som peaks. The monastery route and the village loop thus differ in their named itineraries and landscape features. Check trail conditions and access before setting out.

The GR de Pays “Tour de Chartreuse” also passes through Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse: the route reaches the town via a descent through the forest along the Ruisseau de Rajas and through Perquelin. One stage also runs from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse through the Hauts de Chartreuse National Nature Reserve to Saint-Pierre-d’Entremont. Before your hike, check the relevant information for current trail updates and the rules in force in the nature reserve.

For those who prefer two wheels, the “Easy Trip Vert” e-bike route passes through numerous hamlets in the municipality of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. It offers a view of the Grand Som. The route operates seasonally; check the current conditions before setting out.

Seasonal winter activities

In winter, cable cars take visitors from the town center to the slopes of the Coeur de Chartreuse ski area. Operations are seasonal and depend on conditions. At the Saint-Hugues Nordic site, lessons are available in both classic cross-country skiing and skating; lessons and snow conditions are also seasonal. These activities have different focuses: either the ski slopes or two Nordic skiing techniques.

Saint-Hugues is also home to Les Egaux, a very small ski area run by volunteers. Its winter operations depend on snow conditions and current local arrangements. At La Patinoire en Chartreuse, hockey and curling are offered for a family outing; availability may vary by season. If you are planning your trip around winter activities, it is therefore worth checking the relevant conditions and offerings before setting out.
