The Centre nordique et touristique de la Ruchère gives Saint-Christophe-Sur-Guiers a clear focus: cross-country skiing at elevations of 1,165 to 1,450 metres in the Chartreuse massif. Other attractions include a challenging trail, a viewpoint overlooking the Guiers Valley and the history of the Église Saint Christophe. When planning your stay, it is worth considering these activities in terms of their different time and seasonal requirements.

Cross-country skiing in La Ruchère

The Centre nordique et touristique de la Ruchère offers 35 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails for both classic and skate skiing. This lets you choose between two different skiing techniques without changing the focus of your visit from cross-country skiing. If you plan your stay around this activity, the season also matters: snow cover and trail openings vary by season. Before setting out, check which trails are open and plan your day of skiing according to the conditions. The centre’s elevation and the length of its trail network set the scene for a winter outing.

Trail running and views in the Chartreuse massif

The trail to Col de Bovinant offers a different kind of challenge: this difficult loop starts in Saint-Christophe-Sur-Guiers, is 19 kilometres long and includes 1,295 metres of elevation gain. The stated duration is 2 hours and 50 minutes. Distance, elevation gain and difficulty should all be considered when planning; conditions can affect access and duration. Check them before setting out. The trail passes through the Combe des Eparres, considered a wild and unspoilt area in the Cœur de Chartreuse. There are livestock herds and guard dogs along the route; livestock are present seasonally.

At Belvédère des Riondettes, the focus is on a different perspective on the landscape. The viewpoint is located on the cliffs where the La Ruchère plateau slopes down towards the Guiers Valley, and offers views across the valley. The route there passes through the Chartreuse forest along forest roads and narrower paths. While the trail to Col de Bovinant is described in terms of distance, elevation gain and difficulty, the forest and trail conditions are the main navigational considerations on the way to the Belvédère. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Church history and a blessing tradition

The present-day Église Saint Christophe was rebuilt in 1874 after the medieval church, dating from the early 14th century, burned down in 1870. The portal and the interior of the entrance porch of the medieval church were incorporated into the new building. These preserved elements connect today’s church with its earlier history. During renovation work from 2020 to 2022, the ordinary and damaged windows were replaced with stained-glass windows signed by Arcabas. The church thus brings together integrated medieval features and artistic glazing added later.

Saint Christopher is also associated with a local tradition. The blessing of cars and travellers dates back to 1945–1950 and takes place in his honour on the last Sunday in July. It includes historic and modern vehicles, as well as travellers using any mode of transport. If you would like to plan your visit around this celebration, confirm the date for that year locally in advance.
