Marais des Sagnes is the largest high-altitude marsh in Parc de Chartreuse. You can explore Le Sappey-En-Chartreuse through a range of themes: local wildlife and plant life take center stage on an educational, playful trail, while the Boucle du Belvédère offers a short loop around the village. Orienteering, horse riding and cultural themes offer other ways to explore. When planning, consider the type of activity, the season and the route profile.

Nature and trails

The Parcours du Marais des Sagnes is a themed trail with an educational, playful character. It focuses on local wildlife and plant life. If these themes are your priority, this trail is a good choice. The Boucle du Belvédère offers something different: it is a short, family-friendly loop around the village. It offers the chance to discover several hamlets and enjoy lovely views of the village and Marais des Sagnes. The two options therefore suit different interests: wildlife and plant life on the themed trail, or a loop around the village with its views.

Winter trails and snow activities

One specific snowshoe route is the Balcon de Roche Rousse: this moderately difficult circular route is 5.9 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Foyer de fond in Le Sappey-En-Chartreuse. Suitable weather conditions are required for the route. Its length and difficulty provide a clear framework for planning, and the weather requirement is an essential part of the route.

In winter, the Domaine de Chamechaude has a biathlon stadium, groomed snowshoe trails and toboggan runs. Ski touring routes are also possible in the municipality, but they are not officially marked. If you are planning the snowshoe route or ski touring, check the latest weather and snow conditions beforehand.

Orienteering, climbing and horse riding

Le Sappey-En-Chartreuse has seven permanent orienteering courses: three map-based courses and four more athletic courses. This gives you two different options, from map-based courses to more athletic ones. Indian Forest Chartreuse offers a different kind of active outing, with 15 climbing courses, more than 150 obstacles, over a kilometre of zip lines and big Tarzan jumps.

Les Écuries du Sappey in the hamlet of Bens offers riding lessons, as well as horseback or pony rides. Rides are available for one hour, two hours or longer. The stated durations make it easy to compare the scope of this activity, while the riding lessons offer another option at the equestrian centre.

Art and local history

The church houses a bronze bell dating from 1665, which is listed as a historic monument. In 2002, Arcabas created eight abstract stained-glass windows on the theme of the Resurrection. Le Sappey Ă  la jumelle offers a different cultural experience: an artistic sound walk around Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, created by choreographer Laurent Pichaud. The cultural offerings therefore range from a historic monument and abstract art to an artistic walk.

Getting to the sound walk

Le Sappey Ă  la jumelle is accessible from Grenoble without a car, by taking bus N62 towards Col de Porte. The Col de Porte stop is served only on weekends, public holidays and during school holidays. Plan your journey around these operating days and check the timetable before setting off.
