The Parcours Patrimonial de Bourgoin-Jallieu now includes 65 panels spread across the city. There are also two churches with distinct building histories and a street-art trail. The routes differ considerably too: they range from a circular route to a link between two places and a longer route through varied landscapes.
Routes by Length and Course
The Plan-Bourgoin circular route is 7.3 km long. The Rosière circular route is 13 km and runs over the hills above Ruy and Bourgoin-Jallieu. Its course passes through the Loudon wetland and wooded areas, as well as several châteaux.
The Voie Verte de La Bourbre offers a different type of route: it connects Bourgoin-Jallieu with L’Isle d’Abeau and is 6 km long. The route is open to non-motorised activities, including mountain biking, walking, rollerblading, cycling and running. It differs from the two circular routes both because it connects two places and because of the activities listed.
Churches and Building History
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built from 1865 to 1874, modelled on the church in Voiron. Its style draws on the pointed Gothic architecture of the 13th century. The construction period and stylistic model therefore refer to different centuries. The organ in this church has been classified as a historic monument since June 1991.
The present-day Église Notre-Dame was built in 1859, replacing a destroyed predecessor from the 12th century that belonged to the parish of the former commune of Jallieu. In some areas, the present church features architectural elements of the Romanesque-Byzantine style. Several small columns from the ambulatory of the old choir have been preserved and are now in the two side chapels of the new church. Notre-Dame thus offers a chance to consider both its connection to the predecessor church and features of the present building, without conflating their two building histories.
Local History and Street Art
The Parcours Patrimonial explores the city’s history through its 65 panels. The street-art trail in Bourgoin-Jallieu offers another perspective: it now includes 23 murals, two stencil artworks and a painted staircase. The works are spread across four themes: nature in the city, local textile history, notable people from Bourgoin-Jallieu and the industrial past.
The attractions have different focuses. Those interested in architectural history will find specific dates and stylistic references at the churches; the Parcours Patrimonial focuses on the city’s history. The street-art trail brings together different forms of artwork and themes from nature, history and life in Bourgoin-Jallieu. For activities along the routes, their length, course and permitted uses offer clear points of distinction.
