Montagnieu can be explored through its historic buildings and landscapes. The village is home to Château du Châtelard, the stone Pont Sainte-Marguerite, the Cadran solaire sundial and the washhouse by the Bier stream. If you enjoy spending time outdoors during your stay, you can take the easy Chemin des crêtes circular trail, which offers views of the Chartreuse, the Savoy foothills and, in the distance, Mont Blanc. When planning, it is important to take the different visiting conditions at these sites into account.
Château du Châtelard: building history and heritage protection
Château du Châtelard has been partially listed as a historic monument since 30 January 1989. The listing covers the façades and roofs of the residential building, except for the north building, as well as the remains of the fortifications, the entrance pavilion and the barn. Its main construction phases date to the second half of the 14th century and the first half of the 17th century. These two periods make the building’s history legible as a sequence of distinct phases, rather than reducing the château to a single year of construction. It is also privately owned and closed to the public. So do not plan to visit the interior as a freely accessible attraction; as access conditions may change, check the current status before visiting.
Pont Sainte-Marguerite and the Bier River
The historic stone Pont Sainte-Marguerite lies in the forests of Châtelard. It spans the Bier River and also forms a natural boundary between two municipalities. Hikers regularly cross the bridge. Here, a structure, its connection to the river and its practical use by hikers come together.
A sundial with a global perspective
The Cadran solaire sundial was created in 1936 by Père Rémy Bernard KART. Starting from the exact time in Montagnieu, it shows the times in all the world’s capital cities. Its distinctive shift in scale takes you from local time to a global comparison. The sundial was renovated so it could once again be displayed to the public; check locally in advance whether it is currently on public display.
The Chemin des crêtes circular trail
This easy circular trail offers varied views of the Chartreuse, the Savoy foothills and, in the distance, Mont Blanc. The trail description was updated on 15 April 2026: it starts at the church car park, and the yellow waymarks first lead to the town hall and then along the signposted junctions. This identifies both a specific starting point and the first landmarks to follow. The trail has a different focus from the individual buildings: here, the emphasis is on the landscape and its far-reaching views.
The washhouse by the Bier stream
The washhouse is also associated with a body of water: it stands by the Bier stream, also called the Biève. Both names refer to the same stream and help explain the local name.
Which focus suits your stay?
If you are mainly looking for landscapes, the Chemin des crêtes offers an easy circular trail with scenic views and described waymarking. Culture enthusiasts can explore several distinct themes: the château’s construction phases and heritage protection, the bridge’s history and riverside setting, and the sundial’s function. Access conditions differ: the château is closed to the public, you should check whether the sundial is currently on public display, and hikers regularly cross the bridge. You can take these differences into account when choosing what to explore.
