Discover Bernin through its heritage, walking trails and protected natural areas. Château de La Veyrie sits on a hill above the town, and walkers are welcome on the Coteaux de Bernin. A very different and much more demanding sporting option is the one-day canyoning trip in Gorgette and Craponoz. When planning your trip, you can choose between history, walking trails, nature and a challenging activity.

Châteaux and history in Bernin

Château de La Veyrie, also known as Véhérie, is recognised as part of the heritage of the Isère department. Its elevated position above Bernin offers views of the Grésivaudan Valley and the Belledonne range. The La Veyrie estate also has historical significance: it includes a fortified house dating from the 11th century. Its views and architectural history offer two distinct points of interest if you are interested in Bernin’s historical side.

Château de Craponoz offers a glimpse of a different period: it dates from the 13th century. Among the notable families who owned it was the Vachon de Belmont family. Together, the two châteaux offer a brief comparison between a building in a striking landscape setting and an estate whose history can be traced through its age and former owners.

Walking trails and protected nature

Walkers are welcome on the Coteaux de Bernin. A municipal map marks the walking trails, providing guidance for anyone wishing to explore this part of the landscape on foot. The Coteaux are protected as an agricultural and natural area. Here, walking trails and conservation go hand in hand: the slopes are not only a place to visit on foot but also a protected landscape.

Étang de Bois Claret can be reached via Chemin de Bois Gramont. This wetland is home to wildlife and plant life worth preserving, including nesting reed-dwelling birds. Access is subject to the rules of the protected area, so check the current regulations before your visit. This is an important distinction when planning your trip: unlike a walk on the Coteaux, a visit to the Étang involves a protected wetland, where access rules must be observed.

A challenging canyoning trip

The extreme canyoning trip in Gorgette and Craponoz is designed as a one-day activity. It involves no jumps, but includes very demanding rappels, including two 140-metre waterfalls. So, “no jumps” does not mean the trip is easy: it is the rappels that make it so challenging. It is aimed at people accustomed to exposed sections who are looking for a stronger thrill.

The options differ mainly in their nature and level of challenge: the châteaux offer historical points of interest, the Coteaux offer walking trails, and the Étang is a protected wetland. The canyoning trip, by contrast, is a full-day, very demanding activity. If you are looking for a hotel in Bernin, first consider whether you want your stay to focus on cultural history, walks and nature, or a dedicated day of sport.
