In the hills above Domarin, the Chemin de Maratot is a marked walking trail for nature and outdoor activities. It starts beneath an avenue lined with walnut trees, runs through the forest, continues into the commune of Maubec, and leads via the montée de l’Epallud to the Plateau de l’Epallud. At the initiative of the local council, the trail was completely redesigned and is open to everyone.
Trails and Excursions
The hike “Randonnée pédestre en montant sur le plateau” is of moderate difficulty, is 6.5 km long, has an elevation gain of 230 m, and takes two hours. It is marked with the yellow signs of the “Promenade et Randonnée” system. The route is open year-round and has a car park; it can be reached from the “Maladière Branly” public transport stop by a 600 m walk. Check access and the route before setting out, as maintenance and conditions may change the information.
La RanDomarinoise organizes day trips on Sundays; depending on the calendar, these are supplemented by weekends lasting two, three, or four days. On average, two trips take place each month. Guests can join a day trip even without prior membership. From January to March, the program includes some snowshoe hikes, depending on the weather. In spring and autumn, hikes take place on country lanes and in the mid-mountains; in summer, they often head into the Alps and take on a high-mountain character.
The “Sur les hauteurs de Bourgoin” route passes through Domarin and then continues to Saint-Alban-Roche. Check the route in advance, as conditions may change.
Church and Architectural History
Saint Roch is a small cemetery church with a short nave, side chapels arranged in the shape of a cross, a three-sided choir, and an attached octagonal bell tower. In 1632, the de Neyrieu family, then owners of the Château de Domarin and much of the commune, donated the site of the present-day church. The current church was built in 1858; Saint Roch became the patron saint of the parish of Domarin in 1784.
The Château de Domarin bears traces of a medieval fortified house and former moats, which have since disappeared. The present rectangular residential building has four levels, two asymmetrical pavilion roofs, a small bell tower made of wood and zinc, and oculus dormer windows. The château is not open to visitors. As access status may change, check before planning a visit.
The Croix Saint Roch stands on the montée de la Reytière at the edge of town, in the direction of Maubec. Its inscription gives the date 6 September 1958; it also bears an IHS monogram. Beside the church, a small square by the cemetery is home to the war memorial: an obelisk on a cube-shaped base made of light-colored limestone.
