La Motte-Saint-Martin combines a distinctive municipal building with mountain hikes on the Sénépi. The two themes call for different kinds of planning: the mairie-école focuses on architectural history and design, while a hike calls for attention to the starting point, route and elevation gain. You can tailor your stay to your cultural interests or hiking plans.

Local history and culture

The former mairie-école building is now used as the town hall. It was built in an architectural style typical of the 1930s and is notable for its size, volume and decoration. The mairie-école was completed in 1935 and received the “Patrimoine en Isère” label in 2008. These dates mark two different milestones: first its completion, then its recognition as heritage. The building offers a tangible connection to the architecture of the interwar period.

The church also adds to the picture of the town’s built heritage, though through a more recent conservation project: work on the interior paintwork began in July 2020 and was completed in autumn 2021. This period provides a different point of reference from the construction date of the mairie-école and clearly sets the church work in context.

The Château de La Motte les Bains adds an older layer to the area’s history. It dates to 1590 and was built on the site of a medieval castle. The building therefore brings together the château’s date and the site’s earlier use as a castle. The château is privately owned and cannot be visited; check its visitor status again before travelling.

Hiking on the Sénépi

Mountain hikes on the Sénépi start in the village. One Sénépi route from Treffort is 14 km long, with 1,100 m of positive elevation gain. Take both figures into account when planning: elevation gain is an important route detail, alongside distance. Check route conditions and access before setting out.

Treffort is a hamlet in the commune of La Motte-Saint-Martin and a starting point for a hike. When choosing a route, check its starting point before factoring distance and elevation gain into your plans. This keeps both the location and route in view, rather than basing your decision on the mountain’s name alone.

Agriculture and a seasonal break

GAEC Terre de 2'mains is a 1.5-hectare micro-farm in La Motte-Saint-Martin. It produces vegetables, eggs, fruit and small fruits. Production and sales arrangements may change over time. The variety of produce offers another glimpse of the local character, alongside architecture and hiking.

There is a snack bar at the municipal swimming pool serving cold drinks, ice cream, fries, waffles and paninis. Check seasonal opening details before visiting if you would like to include it in your day’s plans.
