La Buisse stretches from the plain to the Grand Ratz plateau and lies at the foot of the Chartreuse Massif. The town offers different options when choosing a stay: a family-friendly walk with no elevation gain, hikes exploring local history, flora, fauna and heritage, as well as the Gallo-Roman villa. You can plan your day according to whether you are looking for a route through the town centre, views of the higher elevations or archaeological history.

Choose a hike to suit your interests

The “Cœur du village” walk offers insights into the history of the town centre. It is family-friendly and has no elevation gain. If you are looking for a walk with a connection to local history, it is quite different from the hikes in the higher elevations and around Grand Ratz.

“Les balcons de La Buisse” is a hike in the higher elevations of La Buisse. It includes information about heritage or flora. This gives the route a historical or natural-history focus, without implying that both themes are the same. Check current local conditions before setting out, as trail conditions can change.

“Roche Brune et Grand Ratz” brings together several themes: the hike offers insights into the history, plateau, forest, fauna and flora of Grand Ratz. It is considered more challenging. Three starting options are offered for different desired levels of difficulty; check the current arrangements for starting the hike before your visit. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the subject matter and the proposed starting option.

“Berges du Gorgeat et du Parador” offers a different geographical perspective: this hike explores the natural and cultural heritage of the plain of La Buisse. This allows you to compare the focus on the plain with the Grand Ratz theme of the other hike, without treating the two routes as one combined trail.

Between Chartreuse and Grand Ratz

La Buisse’s landscape extends from the plain to the Grand Ratz plateau; the town also lies at the foot of the Chartreuse Massif. La Buisse is a member of the Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse. These geographical references help put the different hiking themes into context: the town centre, plain, higher elevations and plateau offer different perspectives on the area, not one continuous route.

Gallo-Roman traces and earlier local history

The Gallo-Roman villa “Villa gallo-romaine – La Buisse” has been classified as a historic monument (“Monument Historique”) since 1959. Its baths included a very large pool on a terrace supported by imposing retaining walls. The retaining walls are still visible today. This gives the villa a tangible connection to the landscape: in addition to the archaeological evidence, surviving architectural remains are a visible feature.

Archaeological finds from the villa provide evidence of settlement from the 1st century AD. The area’s history also reaches further back: La Buisse was already a well-used transit route in prehistoric and protohistoric times. Together, these facts represent different historical periods, from its early use as a transit area to its Gallo-Roman heritage.
