The Marais de Cras lies in the upper part of the Lèze valley, on the alluvial fan of the Pérolat stream. Together with the protected natural surroundings of farmland, forests and gentle rises in the terrain, it shapes the character of the area. For a stay focused on nature and culture, Cras offers several points of interest: a wetland with diverse habitats, walking loops with their own landscape features, and historic buildings. This lets you shape your visit around the theme that matters most to you.
Wetland Landscape and Natural Environment
The Marais consists of a mosaic of reed beds, wet meadows with purple moor-grass and willow stands. The juxtaposition of these habitats is what defines the area. Species highlighted in connection with the Marais include loose-flowered orchid (Orchis à fleurs lâches), Mercury bluet (Agrion de Mercure) and marsh copper (Cuivré des marais). The natural environment therefore encompasses not only vegetation but also specific botanical and animal themes.
The Marais de Cras has three designations: APPB, local associative ENS and ZNIEFF. These classifications add the area's protected status to its landscape character. If you are taking them into account when planning your visit, check the current designation beforehand.
Walking Loops with Different Landscape Features
The “de Morette à Cras” walking loop passes through the municipality of Cras. The “Boucle par Chantesse et Poliénas à partir de Cras” walking loop starts in Cras and passes through walnut groves and beneath chestnut coppice. The route offers views over the Isère plain and the northern Vercors. The descriptions emphasize different things: the first loop is noted for passing through the municipality, while groves, coppice and views define the description of the second. You can choose according to which of these landscape perspectives interests you most.
For navigation, there is the “Promenades et randonnées en Vercors: des Coulmes aux Chambaran” map guide, available from the intermunicipal tourist office. Since availability and sales arrangements may change, check in advance whether the guide is currently available there.
Church, Château and Local History
Among Cras’s historic sights is the Church of Saint Christophe and Saint Jacques of Cras. A church stood at the present-day site by 1630 at the latest, providing a specific date in the history of the church site. Another architectural landmark is the château, built in Cras at the foot of the hills on the north bank of the Pérola.
The municipality's history of ownership also dates back to the early 17th century. At that time, the Pourroy family, originally from the southwest, acquired some properties in the area of today's municipality of Cras. The local history therefore encompasses not only religious and architectural aspects but also the history of property and family.
Considering Cras as a Place to Stay
If you are looking for holiday rentals in Cras, your personal interests can guide your choice of destination: are you especially interested in the Marais and its habitats, one of the walking loops described here, or the historic sites? These themes give you a concrete basis for deciding whether Cras suits your planned stay and which aspects you would like to focus on.
