Chavanoz reveals its history in a variety of places: at Moulin Goy, in crosses scattered throughout the municipality, and in sacred heritage at the Église de Chavanoz. The network of walking trails in the Bois des Franchises adds a natural highlight. Theatre activities are also among the options you can consider when planning your trip.

Mills and River History

Moulin Goy dates back to around 1660 and was built by Gabriel Goy. Large rings are still attached to its walls; they were once used to moor grain ships. Two clues to the mill’s past come together in this building: its approximate date of construction and the former transport of grain by ship.

The Bourbre encouraged the establishment of important early activities in Chavanoz, particularly the mills at Asnières and Moulin Goy. When the Rhône’s water level is low, the piles of the former port of Bouchet become visible. The two rivers are associated with different historical contexts: the Bourbre with early milling activities, and the Rhône’s water level with when the harbour piles can be seen.

Crosses and Church Heritage

Twelve crosses are scattered throughout Chavanoz. Each has its own name and history. The wrought-iron Croix RD24 was erected in 1844 at the intersection of the RD24 and Rue Pierre Goy. While the group of crosses encompasses numerous individual local stories, this one is precisely located at the junction of two named roads.

The Église de Chavanoz preserves a variety of sacred heritage. It contains part of the tombstone of the priest Agapius, who died in 608. The church also houses a remarkable collection of liturgical objects: chasubles, patens, ciboria and monstrances. This collection is not visible to the general public.

Walking Trails and Cultural Programme

The Bois des Franchises can be explored via an extensive network of walking trails created by the municipalities in the canton. Historical associations link today’s Bois des Franchises with the battlefield. A walk and an exploration of the landscape’s history can therefore appeal to different interests. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

The Petit Théâtre offers theatre activities for children, adults and senior citizens. Its event hall has 166 seats and professional technical equipment. Activities may change, so check the current programme if you would like to attend a performance during your stay. Before choosing a specific event, also check the venue’s capacity and technical facilities.

Practical Planning

Chavanoz is served by the Transisère bus network. Routes and connections may change, so check the latest bus services before travelling. This allows you to plan your journey without assuming a particular route or fixed connection.
