Explore Annemasse’s urban art on foot or by bicycle along a route of your own choosing. Contemporary exhibitions, historical connections, and places to get active or take a break round out this focus. For your stay, you can choose between art in public spaces, cultural events, and more active pursuits.

Urban Art on Your Own Route

Since the 1970s, artworks have shaped Annemasse’s public spaces. They can be found along streets and squares, as well as on certain buildings. Visitors can explore the city on foot or by bicycle along a route of their own choosing, deciding the order in which to see the works. Individual works and routes may change as artworks are added or removed. Check the latest information about art in public spaces before planning your visit.

Two works reflect different local connections. In Parc La Fantasia stands Michel Ducastel’s sculpture “Les Musiciens.” Made from reused materials, it refers to the local screw-cutting industry and is rooted in the tradition of local craftsmanship. On Avenue de l’Europe stands “L’Arbravie,” a monumental tree made of steel pipes. Together, the works range from a sculpture connected to local crafts and industry to a striking tree form made of steel pipes.

Exhibitions at Villa du Parc

Villa du Parc is located in Claudius-Montessuit Garden and Parc Fantasia. As a center for contemporary art, it presents works in painting, video, drawing, and writing. Solo and group exhibitions by French and international artists are held throughout the year. While the route focuses on artworks in public spaces, Villa du Parc specializes in contemporary exhibitions and a range of artistic media. Exhibition schedules may change, so check the current program before your visit.

Historical Connections and Cultural Events

The monument to Michael Servetus portrays him as a martyr for freedom of thought. Servetus was a Spanish theologian and physician and became a French citizen in 1548. He questioned the divinity of Christ and advocated a theology that rejected the doctrine of the Trinity. For these views, he was sentenced to death by Catholics and Protestants. The monument thus connects Servetus’s biography with a specific religious controversy.

The Château-Rouge, also known as the Château de Malbrande, was owned by the de Monthoux family for a long time and is considered part of the local heritage. Château-Rouge also offers a program of dance, contemporary music, and theater performances. Events may vary, so plan your visit around the current program.

Since 2012, the city of Annemasse has commissioned visual artists to create a temporary installation for the Prix Ducastel. It is exhibited each summer in Parc La Fantasia. This art program is therefore seasonal, unlike Villa du Parc’s year-round exhibitions. Check the annual program before your trip.

Activity and Relaxation

Château Bleu is a center for water-based recreation, exercise, and well-being. The Plaine des sports Tessa Worley offers something different: its quiet areas and picnic spots provide space to enjoy nature in the city. The facility also includes a 175-meter-long paved track for bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and roller skates. It is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Here, you can choose between a break in the greenery and getting active on the track.
