Lucinges brings together a strong focus on artists’ books and Michel Butor with opportunities for walks and hikes. The Archipel Butor comprises three sites in the town that are open to the public. Footpaths also connect the hamlets, with walking times and distances provided for these routes. Culture and outdoor activities offer different ways to plan a stay in Lucinges.
Artists’ Books and Heritage
The Manoir des livres is dedicated to preserving and promoting artists’ books. Its heritage collection can be visited year-round, and admission to the Manoir and its exhibitions is free. The building is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. As visiting arrangements may change, please check them before you travel.
The program at the Manoir regularly includes workshops, video screenings, readings, conferences and meetings with artists or specialists. Events are open to all audiences. Those particularly interested in artists’ books will also find a dedicated focus at the Bibliothèque Michel Butor: the public lending library is part of the Intermède network and, in addition to lending services and events, offers a special collection on artists’ books and Michel Butor.
The Bibliothèque Michel Butor also preserves an archive collection on Lucinges and the surrounding area, which has been maintained there for more than 30 years. The artists’ books collection and local archives thus complement one another, without limiting the town’s story to a single subject.
Visits Related to Michel Butor
Since November 2025, the Maison d’écrivain Michel Butor has held the French “Maison des Illustres” designation. The author’s preserved office and the museum space are open to the public only as part of guided tours. These are offered on the first Saturday of each month at 4 p.m. or by reservation. Check the date before your trip.
Another historical landmark is the Château de Lucinges, a fortified house dating from the 14th century. The Fête du livre d’artiste also has an established place in the town’s cultural life: held annually since 2015, it brings together around 30 publishers, artists and writers from France and abroad.
Trails, Views and Nature in the Voirons
Walking times and distances are provided for routes between the hamlets. The various walking and hiking routes in Lucinges are also available as GPX files for GPS devices and mobile hiking apps. You can use the route details to help you find your way and load a GPX file onto a compatible device or into a hiking app.
The Massif des Voirons offers numerous trails for exploring nature, for beginners and more athletic hikers alike. The Voirons also include an area designated as a Natura 2000 site, home to rare animal and plant species. The Boucle du Pralère is a roughly half-day hike with no major difficulties, and can also be done on snowshoes. When planning, you can take account of the approximate duration and this additional way of exploring the route.
One historical landmark at Pralère is the Oratoire de Notre-Dame du Pralère. Built in 1877, it was intended to ward off hail and storms. The views vary depending on the vantage point: from Lucinges, you can see across the Vallée de l’Arve, Annemasse and Geneva with its water jet; the Jura, Salève and Mont Blanc massif lie in the background. The Boucle du Pralère, in turn, offers panoramic views of Lake Geneva, the Jura, Mont Blanc and the Chablais.
