Cross-country skiing and ski areas in winter
The Plaine-Joux plateau has around 31 kilometres of marked, groomed and maintained cross-country ski trails. The grooming is suitable for skating and the classic technique; Plaine-Joux is at an altitude of 1,250 metres. Whether cross-country skiing is possible depends on snow and weather conditions. The views also shape the character of the plateau: preserved, rich and wild nature meets views of Mont Blanc, which may or may not be visible depending on the weather. The Massif des Brasses has both an alpine ski area and a Nordic ski area; their operating conditions and schedules vary by season. For winter planning, the trail length and two grooming styles can therefore be considered alongside the ski areas’ season-dependent operations.
The Massif des Brasses is easily reached by car. A large free car park is close to the ticket offices, slopes, equipment rental shops, restaurants and the ESF ski school. This provides a practical reference point for planning a day of skiing, with equipment, slopes and places to eat all nearby. Check parking and access conditions before setting off.
Hiking trails between panoramic views and heritage
The “La Pointe de Miribel depuis Plaine-Joux” hiking trail passes through a succession of mountain pastures and offers panoramic views of the Giffre mountains. The named peaks include Pointe de Chalune (2,116 m), Haute-Pointe (1,958 m) and Pointe de Haute-Bené (2,215 m). Views of the peaks vary with the weather and season. This trail therefore focuses on mountain pastures and a panorama featuring named peaks.
The trail also passes four sculptures. They are made from monolithic blocks of marble limestone and arranged in a semicircle, 100 metres apart. The same route thus brings landscape and a clearly structured art installation together: the peaks give the panorama specific names, while the material and arrangement define the group of sculptures.
Another historical feature can be found on the ascent via the “Pointe de Miribel par le Col de Creux” hiking trail: a Stations of the Cross dating from 1827. As trail conditions can affect access, check them before setting out.
Cheese tasting and history in Bogève
The guided tour of the Fruitière de Bogève takes visitors into the cheese-making room and the cellars for AOP Reblochon, AOP Abondance and IGP Raclette de Savoie. It is offered every Wednesday by reservation. As tour content and procedures may change, confirmation in advance is recommended. Cheese is also available for individual purchase seven days a week from a vending machine; check availability before travelling.
The bell tower of Saint-Etienne de Bogève can also be visited, with its history introduced during the visit. Public access arrangements may vary. The cheese tour and bell tower offer different ways to explore the area: a guided visit with insights into production, and a visit focused on history.
