Saint-Agnan can be planned around several distinct highlights: the Grotte de La Luire has a freely accessible forecourt and a paid guided tour; the hikes vary in difficulty and time required. Chapels add historical interest, while the Col de Rousset resort offers seasonal activities. When planning your trip, consider whether cultural history, hiking, or winter and summer activities should shape your stay.

Grotto and Historic Sites

The Chapelle Saint Regis lies hidden on the crest of a moraine, amid beech and boxwood vegetation. It can only be reached on foot. Check local access conditions before your visit.

The forecourt of the Grotte de La Luire, designated a “Site Naturel Classé” (Classified Natural Site), is freely accessible. The guided tour of the grotto lasts one hour and is subject to a fee. Before your visit, check the current conditions at the site and confirm tour times and fees with the operator. This lets you plan the freely accessible forecourt and the one-hour guided tour as two different options.

The Grotte de La Luire site was designated a national heritage site on 20 May 1946. Saint-Alexis also has a specific historical connection: an agreement from 1253 mentions the fortified settlement. The Chapelle Saint-Alexis was rebuilt on its older foundations in 1780. The mention of the settlement and the later rebuilding of the chapel are therefore two distinct historical points of reference.

Hiking and Seasonal Activities

The easy Chabotte loop passes through meadows and several small hamlets. The “Les crêtes du col de Rousset” hike is more demanding: it is 9.16 kilometres long, has 455 metres of elevation gain, takes three hours and 30 minutes, and is rated fairly difficult. It starts at the car park at the Col de Rousset resort in Saint-Agnan-en-Vercors. The easy loop and the longer, fairly difficult hike offer two distinct hiking options.

For planning your day, you can also compare the guided tour with the CrĂŞtes hike: the former takes one hour, the latter three and a half hours. This gives you a shorter guided activity and a considerably longer hike as two separate time blocks around which to plan your day.

In winter, the Col de Rousset resort offers alpine skiing and snowshoeing for the whole family. In summer, activities include a rail toboggan, a panoramic chairlift, downhill scooters and mountain biking. The offerings vary by season, so choose the type of activity you want along with your travel dates.

Cultivation and Craft Production

L'hortus de la Vernaison grows aromatic and medicinal plants, some fruit trees and berries across two plots. The plants are mainly distilled to produce hydrosols and a small quantity of essential oil. The business uses the essential oils produced there to make handcrafted, superfat soaps on site. Cultivation, distillation and soapmaking are thus part of one connected production process. This focus differs from the hikes and historic sites: here, the emphasis is on plants and their craft processing.
