Le Poët-Laval combines a fortified medieval village with the Musée du Protestantisme Dauphinois; panoramic views over the Jabron Valley and a variety of routes add further appeal. Local history, the museum and outdoor activities offer different options for planning your trip.

Medieval Village and Château

Le Vieux Village is a fortified medieval village dominated by an imposing medieval keep. The keep of the Château des Hospitaliers is believed to have been built in the 12th century. As a defensive tower, it defines the view of the village. From Le Vieux Village, the panorama stretches across the Jabron Valley. The Château, chapel and ramparts, partly preserved as ruins, have been protected as historic monuments under a decree dated 23 April 1924. The historic site is open daily year-round for free, self-guided visits; guided tours are available on request. Guided tours with commentary also take place at the Château des Hospitaliers year-round. The medieval village layout, protected buildings and valley panorama thus offer distinct aspects of the site.

Protestantism and the Museum

The Musée du Protestantisme Dauphinois is housed in a former residence that became a Protestant temple from the 17th century onward. It presents the major periods in the history of Protestantism in Dauphiné, from the Reformation to the present day. The museum also has a permanent exhibition of contemporary mosaics. The building itself therefore has a Protestant history, while the exhibition spans the subject through to the present day; the mosaics add a contemporary touch. For cultural planning, architectural history, regional religious history and a permanently displayed art collection come together here.

Hiking and Cycling

The European walking trail “Sur les pas des Huguenots” (GR965) starts in Le Poët-Laval and runs for more than 1,600 kilometres to Bad Karlshafen in Germany. The Musée du Protestantisme Dauphinois is the trail’s starting and finishing point. This brings together the Huguenot connection and a practical point of orientation for hikers in the village. Boucle 3 is a 9.50-kilometre mountain bike/hybrid bike loop that starts from Place de la mairie in Gougne. The two options differ in activity and scale: one is a long-distance European hiking route to Germany, while the other is a 9.50-kilometre cycling loop with a named starting point. This comparison can help you decide whether hiking or cycling should be the focus of your stay.

Creative Work in Le Poët-Laval

L’Usine in Le Poët-Laval brings together creative professionals, including those working in ceramics. L’Usine also has an exhibition space for artistic and cultural projects. This adds a focus on contemporary creative work to the village’s historical themes. Ceramics is one specific example of the creative work taking place there; the exhibition space is intended for artistic and cultural projects. L’Usine thus adds another cultural facet to your itinerary, alongside the Château and the Protestantism museum.
