Montchenu combines an old castle mound site and a protected château with a second architectural perspective at the manor house of Montchenu. Two named routes offer different experiences: a cultural and landscape trail with nine stops and a longer marked hill loop. Guided visits for individuals and groups at Ferme Les Pins are available by prior request.
Château and Architectural History
The Château de Montchenu stands at a strategic point on an old medieval castle mound site and dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. It has been protected as a French historic monument since 1979.
The earlier site was surrounded by three rings of battlements dating from the 9th and 11th centuries. These periods should be distinguished: the rings belong to the earlier site, while the château itself dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. 1979 marks its protected status, not the year it was built.
The Château féodal (MH), also known as the Château de Montchenu, is privately owned. As the château is privately owned, do not assume that you can visit the interior; check access in advance.
The manor house of Montchenu is distinguished by a square tower and a tall, four-sided roof in the Dauphiné style. The style reference applies to the roof; the tower is a separate feature.
Two Routes, Different Distances
The cultural and landscape walk “Montchenu, patrimoine & paysages” covers nine stops over 1.2 km. It takes you to the remains of three former manor residences, which bear witness to the political and social life of the Middle Ages through the Early Modern period.
The marked “Montchenu au cœur des collines” loop is 4.16 km long, of moderate difficulty, and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Starting at the village square, it passes through Pichon towards the Château de Montchenu and offers a panorama from the esplanade that stretches from the Vercors cliffs across the Vivarais to the Pilat.
The information offers different points of reference to help you choose between the routes: the shorter walk includes nine stops over 1.2 km, while the longer loop is rated as moderate and has an estimated duration. This lets you factor the cultural walk’s focus on stops and the hill loop’s time frame into your day’s plans.
Visits and Farm Shop
Ferme Les Pins offers guided visits for individuals and groups by prior request. If you are planning a guided visit, arrange it in advance.
Ferme Les Pins sells traditional poultry, eggs, asparagus, apricot nectar and apricot jam directly from the farm. Visits and farm sales are two distinct aspects of what it offers: guided visits require a prior request, while the listed products are sold directly from the farm.
