Valdrôme is laid out along parallel lanes on three levels, connected by steep steps known as “cantons”. These changes in elevation are part of the village’s character and shape the route through it.

Lanes, château and literature

The Château de Vaugelas has a Renaissance-style façade and a spiral staircase. Alphonse de Lamartine is also associated with the village: he stayed at the château, and his poem “Le Vallon” was inspired by his stay. Architecture and literature come together here at a named location.

Trails with different themes and durations

The Parcours découverte du paysage is a circular trail with seven stops and is accessible to most visitors. It introduces the area around Valdrôme, including hamlets, distinctive landforms and peaks, as well as changes in the natural environment. The “Sur le fil de l’eau” educational trail focuses on something different: its seven information panels cover the Drôme River, its relationship with people, the evolution of the landscapes and how they are managed.

The two sections of the Sentier des lavandes can also be chosen according to how much time you have. The route from the village centre to Pracheton takes an hour and a half; the second section runs from the village centre to Pié Bacou and takes 45 minutes. Along the way, it passes lavender fields and offers a lovely view of the village. Lavender conditions vary with the season, so take your travel dates into account when planning.

Animal displays, puzzles and local history

The Parcours animalier de la Ruche features life-size animal displays and information panels about their way of life. On the Sentiers du Dahu, visitors use an accompanying booklet to investigate the legendary Dahu around the village; the activity is suitable for families or small groups. Another option is the walking game “La tournée de la factrice”: visitors put on a postwoman’s uniform and discover the history of Valdrôme with the help of a game sheet.

Nature, lavender and planning your trip

Natural features of the Valdrôme Natura 2000 site include a fir forest dating from the Ice Age, the rare black grouse and abundant blooms of medicinal peony. A much more challenging option is Les crêtes de Tarsimoure: this five-kilometre ridge walk is wild and exposed, offers views throughout and has some demanding sections. It is intended for experienced hikers. As trail conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

During the lavender harvest, which takes place in early August, visitors can watch the last distillation still in the area operating at Collet. The Valdrôme market sells products from producers in the hamlets of Rossas and St Dizier. Check what will be available at your planned travel date.

Numerous hiking and mountain biking trails start at the Valdrôme resort. A municipal notice from August 2026 states that the resort is closed in both winter and summer; the resort restaurant and sports activities are also listed as closed. The notice mentions redevelopment plans and activities through autumn 2026. If you plan to use the resort as your starting point, check its current status before your visit.
