Between a nature reserve, heritage fruit varieties and a former railway line, Péron offers different ways to experience the landscape. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you would like to focus mainly on mountain hiking, nature observation, a visit to an orchard, or cultural events. One specific accommodation option is geared particularly towards stays in the mountains.
Nature between the Jura and the Rhône Plain
Part of the municipality of Péron lies within the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Haute Chaîne du Jura. The Écopont de Péron on the RD 884 is also part of this natural setting: it restores ecological connectivity and allows wildlife, including red deer, to cross between the Jura Massif and the Rhône Plain towards the Alps. Roe deer and wild boar have been observed most often at the Écopont; the presence of deer has increased significantly since 2021. The area’s natural appeal therefore extends from the protected part of the municipality to a crossing that connects landscapes for wildlife.
Heritage fruit varieties at Verger Tiocan
Verger Tiocan is dedicated to preserving and reintroducing old regional fruit varieties. There are 360 trees across 2.3 hectares, including 140 apple varieties, 40 pear varieties and several plum varieties. Tastings and apple juice are offered year-round, subject to availability, while apples are available in season.
Visitors can choose between a self-guided discovery trail with markers and information boards, and guided tours. These are intended for children, groups of all ages, professionals and non-specialists. Guided tours take place by arrangement or during events. If you are planning a tasting or to buy apple juice, it is best to check current availability; apples are available seasonally.
Archaeological traces and events
The local history also offers different points of reference across time: Bronze Age traces include stones with cup-shaped depressions. Numerous sites scattered across the municipality point to significant Gallo-Roman settlement. This allows you to complement Péron’s nature-related attractions with a specific historical aspect.
Discover Room is a venue for themed events in the former Auberge du Fleurier, within the municipality of Péron. Events are held there year-round in collaboration with specialists. These events showcase work by local craftspeople, creatives, artists and independent cultural professionals. Access is limited to event times, so check the schedule if you are planning a visit.
On foot, by bike or on horseback
The Voie verte Farges–Péron is a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects Farges and Péron through a natural setting and is accessible year-round. The route follows a former railway line; connections to the Voie 10 de l’Ain and the Via Rhôna use shared road sections. Before cycling, check the route conditions, particularly on these sections.
Another option is Ecurie du Domaine de Thor in Péron, which offers Western riding lessons on school horses. Times and participation requirements may change; check the latest information in advance.
Accommodation with a mountain focus
The Chalet de la Poutouille is mountain refuge accommodation in an alpine farm building in Péron. Built in 1834, the chalet stands at an altitude of 1,446 metres within the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Haute Chaîne du Jura and is intended particularly for mountain hikers. When planning a stay there, you must follow the rules of the nature reserve. Its altitude and focus on mountain hikers make the chalet a specific accommodation option for travellers whose plans take them into the mountain landscape.
