Montagnat offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: cultural heritage, relaxation at Étang du Saugé, activities in the Revermont and culinary discoveries. Whether you prefer exploring architectural history, spending time outdoors or combining a visit with a tasting, the local attractions offer different options for planning your trip.

Outdoors in the Revermont and at Étang du Saugé

Montagnat lies at the foot of the Revermont. The surrounding Revermont is well suited to mountain biking. If you are looking for outdoor activities, you can make the landscape a starting point for your plans. An equestrian route offers another way to experience the area: the “Itinéraire équestre Montagnat-Ceyzeriat” connects at Mont July with the Ceyzériat–Izernore and Ceyzériat–Villemotier routes. Check the route connections before setting off.

Fishing and relaxation are the main attractions at Étang du Saugé. The area is dedicated to leisure and fishing, and there is also a picnic area. This offers different ways to spend time outdoors: mountain biking in the Revermont, a horseback ride or a picnic break by the Étang. These activities are separate options, not a prescribed combined route.

Saint-Clair Church and protected artworks

Saint-Clair Church was rebuilt in 1862 in the shape of a Latin cross after lightning damaged the earlier church in 1849. Its architecture includes a bell-tower porch and a Flamboyant-style portal. The nave has three bays and is covered with rib vaults; there are also two side chapels and a five-sided apse. Anyone interested in architectural history will find specific details here that together provide an overall picture of the church’s design.

The church’s artworks also invite a closer look. The painting “La Montée au Calvaire ou Sainte Véronique” was classified as a protected cultural object on 26 May 2000 and bears the signature “N. DE HOEY”. It is dated to the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Another painting, “Le Repos de la sainte famille ou Sainte Famille à l'oiseau”, was listed as a protected cultural object on 19 January 1976.

This second work was originally located in the choir of Saint-Clair Church, above the side door. It is currently held at the departmental archives until it can be returned to the church. Check its current display location before visiting.

Château de Montplaisant and fine dining

Château de Montplaisant has been listed as a historic monument since 28 December 1981. The protection covers more than just individual structural elements: it includes the entrance portal and its grille, the château’s façades and roofs, the two entrance pavilions, and the grand salon with its furnishings. When exploring the château, it is worth noting the scope of this protection, which covers both the exterior and the interior furnishings.

Brasserie Saint-Clair offers private visits or visits for small groups on request; arrange the details directly with the brasserie. Visits can include tastings of beers from the “La Bressane” range. Another culinary stop is Restaurant Au Pot de Grès, which serves market cuisine made with fresh ingredients; all dishes are homemade. Menus and services may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information in advance.
